The best period for Russia the past 200 years is debatably the post WW2 years, right after Stalin's death.

The de-Stalinization program was started and the horrors of Stalin were acknowledged by the Pulitburo. The Gulags were closed, the purges stopped, the fear, intimidation and political murder ceased. The country's output was increased rapidly, employment was almost at full (Russia had lost 30 million against Germany and there were labour crunches).

The Communists created free healthcare and education up to and including PhD at the point of access for all citizens of the Union. They had snagged German technology and there was good optimism about moon bases after Sputnik's launch. Russia was looking very formidable, and the average Russian had a great deal of optimism. Russians didn't worry about starvation, murder, invasion, and repression at the levels seen in the past thousand years.

The party ended in the mid 80s when the communist party went full retard with both political and economic reforms (China did the economic reforms only).

USSR's collapse was almost sad, but inevitable. The party poopers of global capitalism gobbled up the USSR where military might couldn't.

If Russia had reformed its economy from it's rigid ideological form, it's possible that Russia would be where China is today, and this talk of Russia behaving like a wounded child would not even have occurred.
