It's funny...I've been talking about this for ages, and Speakeasy too.

De La Hoya wouldn't look out of place in Paris, let alone southern Spain. His skin tone is naturally tanned, but he has completely Caucasian features. Yet the idea that he'd be classed as 'white' anywhere, seems to most Americans to be completely insane.

Example... I've been laughed at on US-centric boxing forums for suggesting that Sergio Martinez is white, despite (I believe) both his parents being born in Spain.

I'm not a geneticist, but someone with De La Hoya's features...I'd estimate being at the very least 85% European. There's a video of Jessica Alba on George Lopez and his DNA test thing, and she's almost ashamed of being European descent. I mean, what does she think 'Spanish' is?

Point is MidWest, if you look like De La Hoya, if you come to Europe, you can experience 'white privilege' haha.

De La Hoya looks basically Southern European. Anyone can have 10% or so ancestry from X race without really showing it at all. It wouldn't be surprising to find that he had Native American ancestry, of course, but it's not 50%.

If your facial features are like him, I would guess you're way less than 40% Indigenous.

Plenty of people are tan and European. Skin tone is only one component. Hair thickness (thicker in Indigenous people than Europeans or Africans), color, curliness, eye color, and facial morphology and height are all obviously other cues.

Mid West I have cousins in my family who are ugly gingers like Louis Ck, my father looks similar to Oscar De la hoya yet he has dark cousins and a tan grandmother. I don't think looking in the mirror and trying to put the puzzle together your self is possible

Brian you would be surprised how powerful the eye-test can be.

Look at Jessica Alba. She acted surprised to find out she was 87/13 European/Indigenous. Obviously that woman was not 50/50. Hell if you saw her on the street who would think anything BUT European seeing her?

Certainly if you are 10-20% something you can miss it but the eye test will let you know a good amount.

George Lopez on his own show got 55% European, 32% Native American, 4% Sub Saharan African and 9% Asian.

Mexico obviously does have a history of Asians going there, since the Spanish and Chinese had lots of commerce once the Spanish started supplying the Chinese with Mexican gold. I doubt anyone would have guessed that Lopez was part Asian from looking at him. But again, a simple eye-test would have told you this guy is mostly a mix of European and Indigenous, which comes out to be 87% of his ancestry.

Looking at George Lopez and understanding he is 55% European can give you some sort of basis for guessing your own ancestry as a Mexican.

It pretty much comes down to power in America. Remember that when the Italian, Irish, Polish and Eastern European immigrants came during the 1890s and early 1900s they weren't considered white either. They were seeing as these alien foreigners who brought with them a very "dangerous" and cult-like religion (Catholicism) therefore they aren't one of "us" sort of speak. That changed over time. The term "Hispanic" was first used in 1970 during the Nixon administration to try to put immigrants and their children coming from Latin America into one group. You can't put Mexicans with Caucasian features in the Caucasian category that would be absurd goes the racist thinking of the day. So the Hispanic community has lived with this term ever since and it has created a huge identity crisis because of it. Heck I even think the term "Mexican American" is weird, I don't say that shit whenever I travel abroad. I just say I'm from the U.S. If I go to Mexico saying that I'm Mexican American they will laugh at me. They'll just say "No, you're American, without the Mexican part."

Yeah like I said above, it just comes down to power. The mindset behind it is European/American culture>Latin American culture. So therefore the thinking goes even if you look white you're still from a Latin American country therefore you're not part of the vastly superior white European and American culture. This is something Argentina as a country has to deal with because a lot of Argentinians feel way more connection to Europe based on their history than they do with Latin America and feel "stuck" in a continent where they don't look like the average Latino. Even the white people in countries like Mexico for instance have an inferiority complex towards Europe and America, especially rich white Mexicans who shun anything that is Mexican made and buy European and American goods instead. This whole thing is a mess in my opinion.

The Jessica Alba video is a great example of the identity crisis of the American Hispanic. The government has told us all our lives that we are not white but "Hispanic" so right there you are already excluding them from the white club and you're essentially saying that no people from Latin America or descendants of Latin America are white and because of this form of discrimination Hispanics have banded together sort of speak and embraced their "brownness" and feel a sense of brotherhood towards each other even though many of them can classify as white. That is what minority groups in the U.S. do to feel a sense of empowerment.

So when Alba goes on the Lopez show in front of a majority Latino audience and finds out the "shocking" truth that she's white, the sky falls down for her. The results essentially tell her that you're not "Hispanic" but you're white. Even Pau Gasol has bought into this B.S. The dude is from Spain and in interviews he has said he's Latino.

The funny thing about this is that I too have felt like Alba like that before believe it or not. For instance I grew up in a predominantly Latino community in Chicago and never considered myself white. That never came across my mind at all until I went to college and started traveling abroad. In college I met people from all over the world and I remember some Chinese people refer to me as the "white guy" and a few Indians calling me the "white guy," It was a shocker for me. A few people have asked me if I was from Spain or Italy and questions of that nature. I've been to England, Argentina, Mexico and Cuba and the term Hispanic does not even exist to them so they would just refer to my nationality (American).

In Cuba I remember a lot of girls wanting to be with me because I was "white", again this was a complete shocker for me. I know a lot of the white posters in this forum say that white privilege is a myth. But I must admit though that having been grown up in America and being told since I was born that I was something else, then all of a sudden Cuban woman wanted to be with me because I was "white," I got to say, it felt really really good at that moment. That's white privilege for you.


That's my rant for the day haha.

Yeah same here. My father is white as hell and looks like CK, but his father is brown as hell so sometimes I ask myself "how the hell did that happen?" And you're right about putting the puzzle together myself which is the reason why I want to have this test done. Sonsowey was just asking me to think off the top of my head. I could be completely wrong though.

So skin color is one of the interesting complex human traits that is NOT highly polygenic. Meaning there are a small number of genes which have a very large effect on skin color.

There are a couple of individual genes that cause more than 20% of the variation in skin color.

So by getting the "lighter" variant of only 2 or 3 genes, the child of a dark-skinned person can easily come out very light skinned. This happens occasionally with the children of mixed race couples, where one child looks "white" and the other "black" in terms of skin tone.

For instance, these two are fraternal twins:



All the same, looking at your hair, height, eyes, facial shape, body type, etc. I think the eye test combined with what you know about your family history still can give you a decently accurate guess.

Email Dr. McDonald and see, he got back to me very promptly but that was over a year ago.

You can use GED Match go for it. I would use GED Match and seperate software but basically if you play with GED Match you can get more than enough results on your own as long as you figure it out. Took me a while to figure it out so that's why I'm offering to do it, but I'm sure you could figure it out.

I just signed up, it requires a 23andme account to sign up. I don't really know what this is going to tell you you didn't already know, but I signed up because I was curious.

Apparently I'm lacking certain genes associated with motivation to preform physical activity, which makes sense, since I do have to overcome laziness to go to the gym. I'm in the 23rd Percentile for motivation. Yet at least I actually go to the gym. What percent of the population even regularly exercises, maybe 10%?

I wonder if real gym rats would find they have all the "motivation" genes.

I am apparently in the 40th percentile for metabolic efficiency. I have always been skinny and people struggling with gaining weight have always just told me "oh you have a fast metabolism". Apparently my metabolism is slightly slower than average. Trolol

It takes some interpretation.

There is no one "correct" answer, which Brian was looking for. PMing with him he did lots of different analyses and kept saying "But which one is right?" All of these analyses basically compare your DNA to a certain number of "reference populations" which can cause your results to vary a lot.

You're Mexican right? Basically you'd expect to be mostly European/Native American, with some small amount of Sub-Saharan African or Middle Eastern descent not surprising. If you choose a "calculator" with reference populations that don't include European, Native American, African, and Middle Eastern, you will get strange results because it is looking at your Native American DNA and trying to fit it into, say, the Japanese category or something.

In Canada it costs $200 for the kit compared to $99 in the US. What a complete ripoff. That's a shame because I've been thinking about doing it for a while too.

Yeah the low price was what made me go for it I think, but only 10 years ago this was a sevice that cost thousands of dollars. It's still a good deal at $200, I think it actually costs them more than that to do the analysis.

I think the whole point is for them to gather enough genetic information to either start making discoveries on their own, ie linking certain genes to certain medical conditions, or to sell the data to people who would make those discoveries.

So they are in essence subsidising your purchase and giving you personal genomic information just so they can get your genome data to later sell.

Basically the results you get are all just "best guesses".

23andme compares your DNA to groups of people they have on file. They get a bunch of Italian people, a bunch of German people etc. Then they get your DNA and compare it. Are there any things that only show up in Italian DNA that also show up in you? OK then they say you're part Italian. Things that only show up in Germans that show up in you? Ok you're part German.

This is not necessarily 100% true, but a good guess. Obviously Italy and Greece have shared a lot of gene flow over history. Parts of Italy were in the "greek" world back in the day, and the people of Southern Europe in general are very related. So you could be Greek going back 2,000 years, and because Greek people went to Italy and settled there and they got an Italian sample that is part Greek, they say you look Italian.

But you could do different tests that use different "reference populations" to give you more accurate results.

Ie there are tests that have tons of different European populations that will give someone who is only European more accurate results, cause it compares you to like 30 different European groups or something.

Google "23andme raw data" and download it, it's a .txt file, and send it to me, I can run these other Euro-centric tests for you if you're interested. Or you could do it yourself, Brian and Midwest did it themselves by loading it onto this website: http://v2.gedmatch.com/login1.php

I'm just gonna load it onto that website myself, so you could do it yourself, but it can be a bit confusing and I've done it before so if you want, I could take care of it.
