The feminists are having a field day with this one.
''As soon as 2016, American women in the United States military will begin serving in combat roles for the first time. Across the world, in what some might think of as an unlikely place, it’s an age-old practice.

Women have been fighting in Kurdish paramilitary outfits, known as the pesh merga, for years, according to Ahmad Khalil and Karen Leigh of Syria Deeply. “Kurdish women, regarded as some of the most liberal in the region, have a decades-long history of fighting,” they write. “Many have fought with the P.K.K., an internationally recognized terror organization that works with the Y.P.G., in southern Turkey.”

Now many have taken up arms against the encroaching Islamic State. “About 30 percent of the People’s Protection Units (Y.P.G.) — the armed wing of the P.Y.D. — is now female,” Syria Deeply reports.

“Long derided as backward, Kurds are now increasingly seen as heroic by many secular, liberal Turks who are anxious about the march of radical Islam,” remarks Asli Aydintasbas in an Op-Ed for The New York Times. Why? “On battlegrounds in Iraq and Syria, Kurdish men and women fight side by side, resisting and dying together.”

One such female fighter, a 24-year-old named Avesta, was profiled by Foreign Policy last month. “Avesta, whose nom de guerre is the same as the holy book of Zoroastrianism, a religion that Kurds consider as their original creed, commands a group of 13 fighters, eight of them female, from the Kurdistan Workers’ Party,” writes Mohammed A. Salih, “a rebel group that has fought the Turkish state for three decades in pursuit of Kurdish rights.”

“Avesta is no stranger to combat,” he explains. “The P.K.K. has fought for three decades against the Turkish military, NATO’s second-largest. Avesta fought in major P.K.K. battles against Turkey in 2012, 2008 and 2005.”

And she and her fellow fighters are well prepared to take on ISIS as a result, she says. “The Islamic State fought rigorously. But it was not as severe as our previous fights with the Turkish army,” she told Mr. Salih. “The Turks have warplanes and air power.” But ISIS’ soldiers “were not as capable fighters as their propaganda claimed. They mostly fought from afar with heavy weaponry like mortars and artillery.”

Some have said the use of female fighters against ISIS is nothing more than a stratagem cooked up by Kurdish leaders. Because ISIS’ primitive, oppressive attitudes toward women and extremist interpretations of Quranic law, it was thought that they might be afraid of dying at the hands of a woman. “The theory is that ISIS fighters believe if a woman kills you, you don’t get to go to paradise,” writes Zack Beauchamp for Vox.

That’s probably not true, he says. “The truth is that ISIS’ approach to women is much more complicated — and troubling — than Western stereotypes about Islamists would suggest. ISIS has its own female brigades, and the group uses them to enforce its deeply misogynistic ideology,” he explains. “The ‘ISIS is afraid of female fighters’ theory comes from a stray quote in a Wall Street Journal piece about Kurdish advances against ISIS. It quotes a female Kurdish soldier as saying, ‘The jihadists don’t like fighting women, because if they’re killed by a female, they think they won’t go to heaven.’ Note that it’s not an ISIS fighter, a scholar, or necessarily someone who’s interrogated an ISIS fighter: just a random Kurdish soldier, who may not be super-familiar with ISIS’ ideology.”

And despite their valued place in Kurdish militia forces, the station of ordinary women in Iraqi Kurdistan — where Kurds form the ethnic majority — is complicated. “The Iraqi Constitution says men and women are equal in Iraq,” writes Suha Audeh for Niqash, an Iraqi news agency. “There is even a quota system saying that a quarter of all MPs in Iraq’s parliament should be female,” she adds. That said, the practice of “honor killings” still persists in Iraqi Kurdistan — the killing of a family member, typically a wife, sister or daughter, for bringing perceived shame upon the family. Refusing to enter into an arranged marriage or engaging in sex outside of wedlock are common motives.

“More than 12,000 women were killed in the name of honor in Kurdistan from 1991 to 2007,” report John Leland and Namo Abdulla for The New York Times. “Government figures are much lower, and show a decline in recent years, and Kurdish law has mandated since 2008 that an honor killing be treated like any other murder. But the practice continues, and the crime is often hidden or disguised to look like suicide.”

“For many women in Kurdistan, life is anything but honorable,” write Johanna Higgs and Liga Rudzite for PassBlue — an independent digital publication covering the United Nations. “Women cannot have a boyfriend, but it’s an honor for a man to have a girlfriend. A divorced woman is like a disease, whereas a divorced man is just a man. A free woman is a bad woman, but a free man is a righteous man. Though there are new laws in Kurdistan promoting women’s rights, they are not accepted generally.”

The pair spoke with Suzan Aref, the director of the Women Empowerment Organization, a nonprofit group devoted to women’s rights headquartered in Erbil, the de facto capital of Iraqi Kurdistan. “It’s a patriarchal system and everything is run by men,” she said. She added, Ms. Higgs and Ms. Rudzite write, “that women have seats on the legislature, but they are symbolic and that women are not represented in the executive and the judiciary branches of the Kurdish government, which is a self-ruling body separate from the Iraqi government in Baghdad.”

The women of the pesh merga, however, may be the key to upending Kurdistan’s gender inequities. When a Kurdish woman fears she may have somehow tarnished the family honor, and has been targeted by a vengeful male relative, the pesh merga will provide her with a safe house, “and try to negotiate settlements with the families,” Niqash reports. What’s more, fighters have to be literate to join the pesh merga, according to Jeremy Bender of Business Insider. Its female fighters aren’t just trained in ammunition and hand-to-hand combat, but politics and human rights, too.

Life for Kurdish women may not be perfect — but they are making strides toward equality that are anything but “symbolic.”

It's not unique...insurgents in India, South America and elsewhere use or have used female fighters; that's what happens when a desperate cause is combined with radical political philosophies (as the article noted, ISIS reportedly have female fighters as well).

With that in mind, western you-go-girlism about it is just as stupid as someone reading about child soldiers in African conflicts and then brainlessly declaring it proof that 12-year olds should be allowed into combat roles while accusing any who disagree of "ageism". In fact, give it a few years and I wouldn't be surprised if progressive insanity will have plunged to those exact depths already.

The whole "ISIS are terrified of female Kurdish warriors" is just a media narrative to manipulate the people. People here in the USA can be moved very well. It's for people to say "you go girl" and all the typical girl power stuff you usually hear. The Kurdish women do deserve some respect since they really are putting their lives on the line.

Let's be honest here though; ISIS isn't "afraid" of anyone.

As far as honor killings go it is true. The Kurdish are still Muslim and do many of the same things that Arabs and Persians do. This includes honor killings, old men marrying young girls, suicide bombings, etc. They may be the most friendly towards us but they aren't complete opposites from the other Muslims.

Women over here going into combat will be an epic fail. I've spoken to many retired Marines and Soldiers. I have also spoken to many men that were security contractors. One of my closest buddies fought under a security contractor company in Iraq through 2005-2008; some of the most violent years during the war. None of these men had anything good to say about women.

Let any man that has seen combat speak his mind freely and throw out the politics and he'd likely wouldn't have much good to say

This doesn't really need to be said again, but here goes:

Women are a liability in combat because even the strongest can be captured and raped. That act sends a message that demoralizes and weakens a military (and a country) far more than when a man is captured and tortured.

While torture can be worse than rape, the very act of rape symbolizes a lot worse things. It says men can't properly defend their own. It says no one is safe.

I don't understand it. On the one hand, feminists are obsessed with keeping women from getting raped in places like colleges. Yet on the other, they're willing to put women in a combat situation, which leaves them open to the worst kind of rape: rape by an enemy.

Beyond that, there is also men's instincts to protect women first and defend themselves second. So women in a combat unit weaken the unit because men's attention to their goal is diverted.

I was going to start a thread on this but I think the war against IS might be the first "war for feminism"?

Not that it is really about that, but in the news commentary there has been a lot of suggestion that the U.S. needs to intervene because of the mistreatment of women. In other words, it becomes part of the public justification for the war.

The reason the kurds/pkk use female fighters is because they come from a radical marxist background, best compared to FARC and similar groups in Bolivia and Colombia. The PKK is on the terror list as is FARC because they are similar. Not saying the kurds are bad guys, just that media spin is showing in full force. The Baath party which brought to power guys like Gaddafi and Saddam Hussein were also in the same marxist movement. It is interesting that capitalist democracy never gained a foothold in the region but marxism did.

Women should be allowed to serve in the military in the way it used to be: in an auxiliary women's service corp. They do not belong in any branch that deploys.

Forget women in combat (what a mess)... they're a damn pain in the ass in unit readiness even for guys in non-combat roles. You take a few hundred men and a small handful of women and send them off for a year, living in close quarters, and forbid them from doing anything fun in their free time... you get the what we used to call "Desert Queens" or "Deployed 10s". Girls that didn't get much attention back home become hot because of scarcity. Turns normally nice down to earth girls into bitch level 10. You think guys are thirsty... you'd laugh at what you start thinking looks good after 12 months of sand, boredom and whacking off to Maxim.

Not to mention the standards are different. Go way to many fatties that couldn't fight off a case of the munchies let alone a Taliban ambush.

Seen way too many fistfights over girls, pregnancies, one girl making a few thousand extra dollars a month whoring herself out in her free time. One chick got caught trying to bring a suitcase full of bills back from Kabul. This shit destroys morale in a place where morale is already thin. Chicks getting pregnant and getting sent home, leaving the guys in her unit shorthanded and picking up the slack.

Got out in 2010 but spend most of the years prior in shit-holes like the Wardak province in Afghanistan and the Horn of Africa. In my years of service I met 1 woman who could carry her own weight. A marine Major / Lt. Col that was also a freak of nature (and from what I heard a total slut with the other officers - all married). Every other girl was weak, crazy, hormonal and would get guys to do their work.

With the PC nazis in charge of the military (sexual assualt classes all the damn time) you're not allowed fun things. They send over b-list celebs on USO tours, hand out board games and send care packages with magazines (no porn) and candy. Woopdie-fucking-do. We wanted booze and pussy.

Sorry for the rambling post, there is just so much wrong with the US military. Its going to be nothing but queers, felons and single mothers as the normally loyal re-blooded God lovin' types see what it has become and say "no thanks".

Runson's idea of an ISIS rape tape is very interesting. I predict, as probably most here would, that feminists and Americans in general would object more strenuously to a rape tape than a beheading tape. Hell, it's surprising it hasn't been done already. You can fake a rape tape easily anyhow, using say, a white girl who is actually married to the "rapist."
