I'm Team Lesbian on this one.

Lesbians requested sperm from a particular donor, and the sperm bank committed an egregious error in delivering incorrectly. Incredibly lackluster quality control--sperm bank should indeed be cutting some massive checks.

Who knows how many times this has happened, but the sperm recipients didn't know notice because the specified donor and the actual donor were of the same race.

Also, apparently she discovered the mix up before the kid was born when she was calling to buy 8 additional vials of the same sperm for a sibling.

So, two questions?

1) Is she going to buy the vials of the "wrong" sperm so her kid gets a sibling?
2) Isn't it expensive to raise kids? If you have no money to move, do you have money to raise kids?

I don't know her specifics, how much crap they have, if they own a house. Setting aside finding a new job, a uhaul truck doesn't cost much.

Part of it is sun exposure, but a large component of it is simply that people tend to get darker as they grow into adulthood, especially males.

This is why women are lighter than men of the same ancestral background--since men have pre-historically and historically preferred younger-looking women--a main or side effect of that is that women are now lighter than men.

I was also snow white as a baby and child, and am now generally olive-skinned even after a few straight months out of the sun (pretty brown after a few days in the sun, though).

Their problem is now with this kid they find themselves on the wrong side of the racism/prejudice fence.

This is amazing.

Here we have a open LGBT couple. These are lesbians. Their very ability to persist happily in this society depends on tolerance, and the promotion of the idea that barriers do not matter. Accordingly, I'm sure that this couple is very much on the left side of the political spectrum and would take great offense to anyone implying that their sexuality should matter in the way that they are treated on a day to day basis.

So, there were have it - sexuality is immaterial. The fact that we have a woman marrying a woman and attempting to have a child shouldn't matter. Tolerance, open mindedness, blah, blah, blah.

But race? No, that's apparently where we draw the line. Because, you see, while we would quite like for you to be blind to pretty substantial distinctions regarding our sexuality (the fact that we are two openly lesbian women in a relationship), we really just can't ignore the fact that this biological child of ours is black. Differences relating to gender and sexuality shouldn't matter, but racial barriers do. Please be blind to the distinctions in sexuality between us (read: don't treat us differently because we are gay), but allow for the fact that we will not be blind to the fact that our child is mixed. It doesn't matter if you're gay, but it does matter if you're black. Differences in sexuality are irrelevant - be blind to them. Race still matters, though - we're not colorblind.

Their neighborhood can tolerate an openly lesbian couple, but it bringing a little mixed kid into the picture is "too stressful"?



For the record, I've got no problem with people claiming they want their child to look a certain way, as they have the right to make that determination.
What makes this case ironic, however, is that we have two people who depend extensively on ideologies encouraging societal blindness to difference and devotion to completely equal treatment proceeding to go against that very logic in their personal lives. They support ideologies that encourage society to ignore their difference and create entirely equal outcomes for them, but won't extend that treatment to their own child. You'd figure that a couple devoted and dependent on such progressive ideologies wouldn't put much stock into the color of their child, but you'd be wrong.

Jesus, I feel bad rawdogging in Bangkok because the thought of leaving a kid to be raised alone by a sweet feminine Thai girl with money would weigh on my conscious. No doubt that the situational irony is amusing, but many of us on RVF are often guilty of the same thing--mental gymnastics, intellectual inconsistency and hypocrisy, lack of self-awareness, cognitive dissonance, etc.--such as:

• Boasting about plowing through chicks in country X, then swearing it's a good place to find a wife--without considering that perhaps the girls will just slut it up for anyone
• Complaining about bailouts and corruption, and blaming... capitalism
• Being gung ho about cognitive differences between men and women, but then getting one's panties in a twist when it comes to cognitive differences between population groups ("races") before vomiting cliches from Cultural Studies 101

That would seem appropriate being that they had a girl. It seems like women care more about racial identity than men (maybe because it's their groupthink mentality?) When I was in middle school, the guys of all races were friends with each other while the women self segregated themselves.

Basically this dude is saying that his kid's life will be easier if he were able to pass as white, since in America, blacks are 'feared'.

Maybe he can start with instilling self esteem into his son. A confident smart kid of any colour has a decent chance in the Anglo world. In contrast to places where real racism or prejudice exist (Arab world, South Africa etc) where a person is born into their respective tribe and not into into their individuality.

Confidence and intelligence trump all else. Confident and intelligent people are able to shape society to suit them not the other way around.
