I'm wondering what you all mean by "miserable winter" in Europe.. is it that bad compared to the canadian winters? From what I see on the web the avg winter weather is colder than Moscow (Montreal) so I think most destinations will still be an upgrade.
Definitely value fun and Gemütlichkeit more than the weather this time around, but it's a factor.
Looking at Estonia, Czech, Hungary, Slovenia, Poland etc.

I've had my share of SEA and would stay away from that if at all possible.

Edit: oh god, this thread is old, didn't notice. Sorry for necroposting.

I can answer this as someone who has experienced Winters in Eastern Ontario/Western Quebec, and has spent time in Eastern Europe (Hungary).

In Canada, it does indeed get much colder. However, you have a lot more sunny days.

Those crisp, clear winter days that Canadians spend outdoors in the winter months don't happen often in Eastern Europe. Instead, you get gloomy, grey weather. Days, even weeks will pass without a ray of sunshine. It gets depressing.

When I was in Eastern Europe and went out for a walk in the evening, it would be +2C, much warmer than anything we have in Canada, and I'd still be shivering to the bone. Your body adapts to the warmer temperatures and gets cold more easily. At least mine does.

On the plus side, Eastern European winter doesn't drag on as long. You can usually enjoy comfortable weather by mid-March. In Canada a warm St Patrick's Day is a special treat.

Bottom line is that winter weather sucks no matter where you are.
