Sorry about being late to this party. Had to put a few words in for Brother Stevie.

For those of us who loved his music, but weren't musicians themselves, it was easy to like him, and yet you didn't know exactly what made him a musical genius. This video should help clear up the confusion for non musicians like me.

A few years back a funk musician tracked down a multitrack master from the recording session for "Superstition." In the words of the internet, what he found out about the main groove of that song will surprise you!

I also find that a good cover by another band came bring songs by your favorite artists back to life.

I have a copy of that multitrack too, it's a a fascinating listen. There are two different vocal tracks but only one was mixed into the hit version.

All his albums from the 70s are phenomenal albums. Growing up in the 80s and 90s I always associated him with the song "I just called to say...". I had no idea about his earlier works until later in life I randomly listened to songs in the key of life. I wish I could say someone turned me on to his music, but I just happened to download that album in the heyday of napster, etc.

Music of My Mind is my favorite. To me it sounds like the album where he found his voice. He played the guitar, bass, drums, piano, synthesizer, harmonica, clavinet, lead and backup vocals. Basically a one man band.

Happier than the morning sun is my favorite song of his.

Yeah. The 80's wasn't kind to soul music. The temper of the times suddenly had guys like Stevie, Lionel Ritchie, and Kool and the Gang, turning from their raw selves into Adult Contemporary Easy Listening artists. Even Earth Wind, and Fire made an improbable and misconceived late attempt to change their style into disco.

I am still trying to find a way to blame it on Ronald Reagan.

For me, the rule of thumb with Stevie was, his music was still cool as long has he was wearing a floppy hat with metal studs in it:

The 80s weren't kind to music overall, in my opinion. Yes, there's some really good music from the 80s but not compared with the diversity and greasiness of the early 70s

My favorite Stevie track right now. Hotter Than July's A-side can exchange punches all day with the best work from his "Golden Period."
