Agreed, this is the only look I'd consider of the 'good' ones posted. The others honestly look phaggy tryhard. The above look is great though, add a couple of nice sunglasses and a cool watch and you look exactly like the kind of guy who is just back from the marina and your boat. Laid back, classic masculine with money.

I get compliments on my shit pair of sperrys all the time. I've walked through multiple pairs. Worn them out while traveling, to business meetings, and to the beach.

The case for sperrys and boat shoes:

1. Versatile - you can dress them up or down, wear them with a suit or a swim suit
2. Comfortable - the support thing is bs, your body adapts to what you put it through. If you wear shoes with over support you make your ankles weak and your legs flimsy.
3. They wear well - had the same pair for years and they've only gotten better looking with age

The whole don't wear shorts thing is ridiculous too. A polo, khaki shorts, and boat shoes is my go to summer look. Can hit any venue during the day and look good. Of course if your clothes are too big for you you're going to look like a dweeb. Everything needs to be fitted and sharp.

Never had any problem pulling with this look and I've taken it all around the world.

I think boat shoes definitely upgrade your look over wearing flip flops, sandals, or sneakers. I think, however, that the rest of your outfit needs to be sharp or else the boat shoes will make you look weak, because they don't have a strong presence like other types of shoes (like espadrilles, which seem to have a stronger presence). Like the guy in blue shirt above, you need to have a well-fitted shirt with a good texture in the material, and unbaggy shorts that end above the knee. If you wear long pants, they need to be on slim side and little-to-no break.

Then, the color of the shoes needs to be congruent with the rest of your outfit. In that picture above, the dude's shoes appear to almost exactly match the color of his hair, so it draws attention in a positive way to his entire physique.

What Mike said. If you can match boat shoes to your outfit they are great, because most people can't do that.

You aren't seriously comparing Air Max to boat shoes? That's like saying my ferrari is bad for off road use.

I love boat shoes. Must be an LA thing, living by the beach you need nice, comfortable shoes to wear with shorts without socks and they are pretty good for that. I have wider feet too and they are very comfortable. I might try out a pair of Toms or something, but I've never found a design I've liked.

All I have to say is:

1) boat shoes are great if the right ones

2) it is too hot to wear pants on many days in many places for guys that sweat easily like me

3) short sleeve button ups and polos look like shit on guys that aren't big either ripped or bear man style, and in edge cases have truly cool arm tatt artwork

As for shorts, I've always struggled finding a pair that fits right. I've never had a pair that I've truly liked.

Any suggestion of brands with links? I like the Cali style.

Keep in mind there is a difference between a boat shoe and a driving moccasin. Similar, but the OP put a couple moccasin up.

Boat shoes are not for pants. Ever. A moccasin is OK with pants, but not jeans (for the most part).

Why do I wear boat shoes? Because I want to ride my bike to the beach, maybe help a buddy trailer his jet ski, probably have a rinse in the fresh water and all that without having to worry about my shoes.

If you are questioning the idea of these things, they are not for you. Dont buy them, you will look gay.

Why is called 'boat shoes'? Does it have something to do with operating / lounging in a boat? I was under the impression with clothes as well as looking good, there should be a practical purpose behind it.

Non slip, non marking soles. Also can take years of sea, sun and sand and still do what they are meant to do.

Fucking impossible.

Luckily I had a nerdy tinder girl over that loved the challenge and she spent about 1hr 30min trying to figure out how to relace my boat shoes with new laces while using string, wire and tape.

Can someone please tell me when the fuck it's acceptable or a good idea to wear shorts with a shirt+tie or shorts with a jacket? I see that look all the time in magazines and it's the stupidest thing in the world. It looks so try-hard and not to mention, it's completely impractical. If I'm wearing shorts, it's because it's too hot to wear anything else. Shorts look good with a vneck tshirt, a polo shirt, an untucked dress shirt that's tailored to be worn that way or maybe a light sweater in the evening. Anything else and I think you're missing the point of shorts.

In my personal experience, going from 5’9.5” barefoot to pushing 5’11” is a significant upgrade, physically and psychologically. I really think the Sperry Top Siders aren't costing you much height. Compared to some cold weather footwear maybe but it's about the best option for summer.....Note: NOT all boat shoes are the same..

FWIW I throw a set of heel supports in all my shoes. Call it to try hard that's fine but it pushes me over the 6' threshold which gives a confidence boost and makes it easier to imagine being 7' tall like McQueen talks about

I was walking around my campus wearing boat shoes, white linen shorts and a teal V neck and somehow stood out like crazy. Most dudes are wearing skinny jeans, basketball shorts, boxy jeans, plaid cargo shorts around here.

Nike New Balance shoes are a good shoe to wear with shorts? Yeah, if you are working out that is cool, but out and about trying to pickup girls? That seems like something Zuckerberg would do. You don't want to dress like Zuckerberg, do you?

Also, shorts should be worn just above the knee..Only bitches wear short shorts.
