You need a local connection if youre heading to the south. Social circle is key. Otherwise you should focus on college town events (in the fall) or Tampa or Austin

Other advice for Brits is actually to move to the US -- british accents sound more intelligent, so likely it will help with your career. You can make friends with a higher social set with a british accent, marry up, get promoted more quickly, and have affairs with hotter women... In addition, wages in any skilled profession in the US are already substantially higher than in the UK.

I've had british colleagues in the US who were complete rubbish, and yet who made careers out of sounding more sophisticated than they actually were...

One of my good buddies from the UK played collegiate sports, partied all the time, and didn't really do shit academically....yet he bullshitted his way into the upper echelon circles, hot chicks, and a phat career thus far at Goldman Sachs.
