I'm so damn sick of people acting like now that the average American is fat, we have to redefine the term so that it encompasses fewer people. News flash- The makeup of the population may have changed, but what is healthy and attractive has not. The average American woman, at 5'4" and 165 lbs, has a BMI of 28.3. This is well into overweight territory, and in fact closer to obese than to normal. So to answer your question L.Z. Granderson, YES, the average American woman should consider herself fat. Just because something is becoming the norm does not make it desirable.

The author of that piece is a middle-aged black gay CNN columnist, and if you put those together, you can kind of guess he'll take the liberal position on most issues. I'm liberal on some issues too, so it's nothing against the guy (and he's free to write what he wants), but he can be a little predictable as far as opinion writers go. The "fat is beautiful" drivel is congruent with the archetypal role that this columnist plays in my mind.

His first piece on CNN was entitled, "Don't Let Ignorant People Vote." In that piece, he supported adding a written test as a requirement for voter registration. What's strange is that written tests used to be administered as part of voter registration, but they were eliminated by the Voting Rights Act of 1965 (as well as a bunch of other legislation and case law) because it was racially discriminatory against poor Southern blacks.

In terms of CNN personalities, I think this guy is a little less intellectual and persuasive than, say, Fareed Zakaria.

^^Zakaria is the last reason I have one minute shred of respect left for CNN. The man is a brilliant journalist and CNN is lucky to have him. He brings back the cold hard realism when other CNN anchors have their heads too high in the clouds.

I don't understand why Zakaria bothers to stick around with that network. He could get on with the BBC or some other prestigious news agency and kill it.

Zakaria is terrible. His role at CNN fits his bias and skills.

CNN died when Lou Dobbs jumped ship, Christine Amanpour was good years back before her ego and tingles for network executives took over also.

Best thing on CNN is Bourdian and that's because he doesn't do any news.

Yes, 165 lbs is obese considering that the average height of a woman in this country is 5'4". Sad to see this drivel coming from CNN now too.

I noticed some comments on a female friends Facebook page by women who were HUGE but had thin husbands. I assumed they'd married young and gotten fat while married but no...the men married these women recently.

These men might not be Adonis, but if this were the '50s you could easily picture them with trim wives. Below is a distorted, un-colorized edit of one of the pics I saw. I felt bad putting the pic out, so I altered it as much as possible while still allowing you to get the gist of my point.

Also, I know what you're thinking already and I looked these guys up: they're both employed and neither is below-average height.

It always kills me now to see fat girls who think they're thin/act like they're thin. On the bus this morning, some land whale beaches herself between two senior citizens. There wasn't much space to begin with, but definitely not enough for her. Anyway, she had a lululemon bag (might have been filled with pastries though), was wearing a shirt for one of those stupid 5k races that out of shape people do, and had a gym bag. If this girl works out rigorously and often, then she has an awful diet. More than likely, she goes to the gym, walks on the treadmill for 5 minutes, and leaves.

Fat women should be hitting the gym and doing 5x5 sets of compound lifts.

I've been working with an overweight friend lately and she has been making impressive gains. Her fat is starting to slowly melt off. Her mood has significantly improved and her eating habits are even healthier.

In this day and age of sedentary lifestyles and crappy processed food, gym time has become a requirement for maintaining sanity in an office. I'm surprised there haven't been tax incentives for going to the gym yet.

Not scientific of course, but I swear on social media whenever a fat woman posts a picture of herself, there are a billion likes followed by "gorgeous!". When an attractive woman does it, some likes followed by "pretty" as if one can sense the resentment.

Anyway, my theory is that a lot of these guys (employed, reasonably attractive) have been brainwashed into it. As I've often mentioned, I've been set up with some fat pigs, with people intimating that I've had fun with attractive women in their mid-20s, time to settle down with someone who would be a "good wife". My response is always, attractive women want to settle down just like unattractive women, so this makes no sense. But I think a lot of guys have been brainwashed by feminist propaganda, instead doing of what is instinctual.

Pun intended, we've reached critical mass with the overweight / obese. The problem is deeper than obvious lack of self-control, exercise, or good habits as peer groups reinforce the notion that this is somehow OK. People delude themselves and their friends that these BMI levels are acceptable. I spend a lot of time in and around a major American city - full disclosure: this is the midwest - and there is a sense of "I'm OK if you're OK" with this fatness. The only exception is that 2 week window after New Years.

It's easy to blame the messenger, but CNN is only reflects the majority's delusional notions about themselves. After all, everyone is sooo overscheduled, sooooo busy... nobody pauses to think whether most of this bullshit is worth doing. The fucked-up food we eat is a symptom of the consumer-robot lifestyle: "On the Go" Lifestyle + Bad Food = Big Pharma Medications in 10, 15, 20-years time. Just the way they want it...

Roosh said as much in a recent post regarding American culture, to go against the tide one needs an almost superhuman (OCD) level of self-control. On a personal note, I'm banking on developing that high level of self-control here so as to make the move away successful and permanent.
