Restaurant customers take 2x as long than a decade ago because of camera phones
http://news.distractify.com/culture/crai...urant/?v=1

2004 start to finish: 1 hour 5 minutes
2014 start to finish: 1 hour 55 minutes

Why is serving the same dishes in 2014 taking so much longer?

Customers setting up wifi when they arrive.
Customers too distracted by their phones to read menu.
Customers taking pictures of their food.
Customers taking selfies.
Customers asking waiters to take pictures for them.
Customers sending back food to be reheated because it got cold while they were taking all their pictures.

...and then the customers downrate the restaurant for slow service.

"Alpha children wear grey. They work much harder than we do, because they're so frightfully clever. I'm awfully glad I'm a Beta, because I don't work so hard. And then we are much better than the Gammas and Deltas. Gammas are stupid. They all wear green, and Delta children wear khaki. Oh no, I don't want to play with Delta children. And Epsilons are still worse. They're too stupid to be able to read or write. Besides they wear black, which is such a beastly color. I'm so glad I'm a Beta."

RE: Restaurant customers take 2x as long than a decade ago because of camera phones
Quote:26 out of 45 customers spend an average of 3 minutes taking photos of the food.

14 out of 45 customers take pictures of each other with the food in front of them or as they are eating the food. This takes on average another 4 minutes as they must review and sometimes retake the photo.

I sometimes wonder if I'm the only person who doesn't take photos with my phone. Do more than half of restaurant patrons actually take 3 minutes to take pictures before eating?

That is quite interesting. I must depend on the type of restaurant though. I've never seen this at the local family steak house.

Prole customers take 2x as long than a decade ago because of camera phones.

I honestly don't know one guy that takes food pics or restaurant selfies

Interesting observation. I don't know a single person with an iota of class who used their cell-phone in the middle of a meal. Being rich means avoiding low-class prole behavior, something I approve of.

Bojangles can show you how to turn restaurant food pics into bangs ;-)

That said, it still takes more like 15 seconds.

In defense of longer seating however I will say service in US restaurants is incredibly rushed. It annoys me immensely to have a waiter at my side asking me if I'm done every second I put my fork down.

Filipinas in particular seem to have to take a picture of everything before they eat it.

Taking pictures of your food strikes me as so sad and desperate.

Asians generally are fucked in the head with taking photos of anything, but especially food. Christ, they'd take a photo of a glass of water if there were nothing else on the table. Even the guys do it. At this point, I think it's probably just an ingrained habit. I think I'm going to start taking photos of people taking photos of food and start a website taking the piss, kind of like People of Walmart.

Any guy who takes pictures of his food should go ahead and get himself castrated.

It's low class, pathetic, narcissistic to the 9th degree, gay as fuck and mind blowingly retarded that one could think their salad is so important it deserves a fucking photo.

I Selfie Shame people, including girls. If I'm at dinner with a chick and she whips out her phone to take a pic I shame her in a charming but sarcastic tone. Then they put it away.

"OMG LOOK AT MY CRAN-APPLE SALAD AWASH WITH WALNUTS AND DELICATE LITTLE PIECES OF CHEESE!! I MUST TAKE A PHOTO RIGHT NOW AND SHARE IT WITH MY SOCIAL MEDIA CIRCLE JERKING FRIENDS SO WE CAN ALL 'LIKE' EACH OTHER'S PHOTO AND TELL EACH OTHER HOW SMART AND COOL WE ARE!!"

^ A family friend of ours once told me that taking photos of your food is the Asian equivalent of saying Grace. I know people in general are affixed to their smartphones, but don't ask me why they feel a need to document every bloody thing they eat/see/do as if it never would've been -- "photos or it didn't happen" in the literal sense.

That said I only photograph stuff I've cooked and even then it would be something special. Something like takeaway pizza or fruit from home -- that's when I feel a burst of self loathing for my skin colour.

On the flip side - if you owned a restaurant and no one ever stopped to photograph the food, would it make you nervous?

On the surface, perhaps; but if they were doing that everywhere else already -- "because it's, like, what we, like, always do anyway" -- what would be the value in that.

Yeah I could see this.

Like so many things in life, there's an art to being a server, a perfect timing required based on the customers needs. It's why a good server stands out so much and is so appreciated... Man or woman

Why do restaurant customers take 2x as long? Because women.

It's hard going to a restaurant with a pack of women without them whipping out their phone and taking their like fodder Facebook pic of us sitting at the table.

They should just have mounted cameras at all dine-in restaurants and just get it over with.

I am going to call BS on that theory. The saying of Grace goes back centuries. This goes back five to ten years, tops. It's like Asian wedding customs. Half of them have been pinched from the West, and half of those (e.g. diamond engagement rings) were manufactured within the past century. "But it's tradition!" Bullshit. Corporate lemmings. Likewise with all of these stupid hand signals and idiotic faces they make in photographs.

I'm pretty sure he was being tongue-in-cheek -- surely wouldn't have taken that idea seriously? Tradition, my behind. It's more like smartphones are the o̶p̶i̶a̶t̶e̶, ooops, tradition of the (Asian) masses.

I have heard (and seen) some bizarre justifications for things. I have actually had people say this kind of stuff to me over here, like it's a tradition to do all sorts of things that I know they have only been doing for ten years. Like there are all these "traditional" cake shops here selling tiramisu (which was supposedly invented in 1960 anyway). It's a famous food in Taiwan. GTFOOH.

It isn't just Asians. I have maybe 80 Facebook friends. One of the reasons I rarely log in is due to food pics. Age, class, education, doesn't matter many do this. Most are women though.

Next time you're with an asian girl just playfully take her phone for the duration of the meal and hand it back afterwards. If she doesn't complain much about this and is even good natured about it then chances of a bang are high.
