Can someone familiar with Kickstarter explain to me how it isn't rife for scamming abuse? I mean, I know that manyof the projects on there are legitimate, but is there some mechanism in place to protect the donators/investors from fraud?

For example, let's say I made a Kickstarter campaign to provide books to poor children or something like that, and I raise $10k. Do I just get a check in the mail from Kickstarter for $10k? If so, what if I just cash it and disappear? At the very least it seems like you could pocket a portion of the funds.

I just don't get the crowdfunding idea. Seems like the perfect platform with which to part fools and their money and otherwise scam the credulous.

No point in getting angry and decrying the end of Western civilization. This guy got lucky. He's not much different than someone that bought a quick pick lottery ticket and won. A very small amount of people will stumble into money without having to work for it like everyone else. Nobody said life is fair.

Seems like a few are jealous that they didn't come up with the concept of potato salad game. He's going to throw a party that could attract hundreds people, and they will all be looking for him. At least one of them will be bangable. This looks like something set up for a small social web that blew up. He's turning it into something that people can latch themselves on to. It's an internet version of a block party, but with merchandise and a future book.
