I'm curious if a random fight breaks out what is everyone's policy on breaking up/not breaking up that fight.


I'm just curious honestly because of an event this Friday. I broke up a fight of about 4 guys and to be honest besides the fact I thought it would be fun to mix it up I mostly just hate seeing young guys that I can relate to being arrested and dealing with the assault charge bullshit.

Kind of risky, you could catch a random punch or stab and end up on the floor leaking on behalf of some strangers.

I do break them up. Makes people respect you and usually makes girls around appreciate you.
I'm a fairly muscular guy which is probably why people never take a swing at me. Knowing how to defend yourself makes it easier as well. I'm trained in martial arts so I'm not really worried but of course there's always a chance. But hey, so be it. Don't think I'd break up a knife fight. If anyone pulls a knife, I'm getting the fuck out of there

Strangers, no, either side wont know who you are and might think you're trying to fight them too. Friends and people from social circle, yes, they know who you are and your intentions to break up the fight.

This. Unless you want to get in a fight, let strangers do their thing. If you don't know what the beef is you could easily end up having the fighters turn on you.

I think if a fight is getting out of hand you should try to break it up if possible. If someone is knocked out and the other fighter is just stomping his head, or has him mounted just bashing his face while he is unconscious you should start to step in like "Hey man, hes done, hes done, its over" something a long those lines. Every situation is different but I wouldn't feel comfortable just standing around with my iphone out yelling "World star" while someone is getting beaten to death.

Go to Glasgow, Aberdeen, Manchester, Leeds or Blackpool and try breaking up a fight. Chances are you're going to end up on the receiving end of a fist or kick if you're not careful regardless of your involvement.

I'm with Cr33pin in that you should only ever involve yourself in situations where if you were to stand by somebody could lose their life. In any other case I think it's wise to stay away.

You shouldn't involve yourself in a conflict you know nothing about. If you don't know why they are fighting, who they are or what the motivation is then stay out of it.

I know your trying to be a good guy but honestly nothing good can come of breaking up fights. You may catch a random punch, maybe someone involved in the fights friend standing on the sidelines decides to crack you in the face with a beer bottle when your not looking or punch you. I actually had a buddy who got a bottle smashed on his face trying to be a good guy and breakup a fight. Wound up getting pretty messed up I think temporarily in a coma, had a bunch of facial reconstructive surgery, etc. Heck even getting mistaken by the cops as being part of it and being arrested.

Honestly there's only one scenario when I would breakup a fight. If one person is getting ganged up on or if someone is punching or kicking someone who's knocked out or obviously has had enough. Those are really the only situations I would step in and try to breakup a fight.

I can't help but jump in and break up a fight.

There are a few bars around me where I know the staff pretty well.

I helped break up fights in two of the bars and drinks were on the house for a while.

Got my hand cut up in one of them when a guy smashed a window.

Got laid after breaking up a fight too, it was the easiest opener of my life "did you see that fight?". My adrenaline was pumping off the charts right after, felt so good...had really rough sex that night.

Here in America if you witness a fight and someone ends up getting beat very badly or worse....

You could be charged with something. That being said I usually walk away from any fight.

As others already said, if it's your friends or associates, be a hero and break it up if you feel like. Never, ever get involved with stranger's fights. Don't kid yourself about them respecting your manhood for doing so - soon as you step in you're a target for one or both sides. Idiots get themselves unnecessarily stabbed and shot all the time because they wanted to be the arbitrator to shit that wasn't their business in the first place.

It's the 21st century. Look after you and your own, don't risk your neck for someone who would just as soon kick you down and laugh at you for trying to help them. All those whiteknights getting their faces kicked in because they tried to 'save' a girl who's boyfriend was beating her in public, and he wound up being turned on by both of them? That's you in stranger fights. Not worth the hassle, nobody will be impressed no matter what the outcome. If it bothers you just phone up the cops and or walk away.

I'll break up a fight if possible.

If there is a fight going on that scares my companion or interrupts my tranquility, it's kind of my business too.

Every situation is different, and sometimes you shouldn't mix with people who have nothing to lose. However, sometimes the problem is just one or two dickheads who will cower away at the first sign that they don't have the upper hand. These kinds of things don't have policies, just instincts. Sometimes you jump in, sometimes you peace out.

@Billy Chubbs: A few nights ago while walking down the street, I saw a loud, angry drunk guy grab his female companion by the hair and throw her into a steel gate, so I walked up and confronted him. A cop showed up a couple minutes later and detained the drunk guy. You may call that "white knighting." I call it being a decent person who stepped in when he saw someone being physically assaulted.

On some level, we are all responsible for what happens in our own societies.

Off topic but this thread got me thinking. Let's say someone charges at you (hasn't actually hit you yet). Can you hit him first and be ok from a legal standpoint? I'd think that the case for self-defense is very strong in this situation but I'm not sure.

^Exactly what Matt said. Fights should be broken up, but in a very specific way. You should grab the attacking persons' arms from hind and pull them back and ask them to back the fuck down. Make sure you have support or else you could be in trouble.

someone charging only means you have a better case if it goes to trial. But you likely will have to go to trial as a plea won't be offered if the other person was assaulted.

If my friend is involved, I'm going to sit back and watch as long as it's fair and honorable.

If my friend is involved and he gets jumped, I'm jumping in with something long and sturdy. (no dick joke intended)

Two guys fighting, again, it depends...you are always risking something breaking up a fight. I usually watch, unless it gets horrible and then I try and break it up. Never had any problems in that situation.

We live in such a post-modern individualistic society, the idea of helping legitimately needy people is almost frowned upon, and that's bad.

That is pretty fucked up. If you go by the laws of attraction (not talking about biological but sourcing, etc.) she is attracted to the guy that beats her. No way would she have been honest. She wants to protect the one she loves (or thinks she loves), but really it is probably she grew up in a pattern of abuse and he continues it for her.

Not trying to dump on you Teedub, you did the honorable thing and I respect that.

Just that chicks are fucked up. I doubt that was the first time he threatened her and she wouldn't leave him.

My policy is: record on my cell phone camera and yell "Worldstar!".

There was actually a BIG fight last night at the bar I was at in Venice. Some dude who was a UCLA lineman and other dudes got into it pretty hard. They were twice my size and I'm a pretty big guy, I don't think even the bouncers could handle it because they called about 20 officers to the area and it took a LONG time to break it up.

In general, its none of your business to get involved. However, if its a light scuffle or argument, the gentlemanly thing to do would attempt to calm the situation down or at least separate the parties involved to a point. If the guys are clearly crazy, its best to steer clear.

Otherwise, FVCK NO. I might already have a concussion from a simple martial arts accident... I've had an ongoing headache for a week and a half now and it sucks... doc says might take a full 18 months for recovery. I can see this happening very easily in a fight. So actually from now on, the only fights I'll be participating in are the ones where I bring a gun to the party.
