Facebook ran psych experiment to make us all organ donors
Facebook... even more evil than previously thought:
http://www.buzzfeed.com/charliewarzel/fa...-perform-a
Quote:According to the study, Facebook manipulated the News Feeds of 689,003 users to study whether online emotions can be contagious. For a week, some users were shown posts in News Feed containing a higher number of positive words, others were shown posts with more negative sentiments.
Okay... I guess that's not too bad... manipulative, but... wait, then this:
Quote:Influenced in part by conversations over dinner with his med-student girlfriend (now his wife), Zuckerberg decided that he should use social influence within Facebook to increase organ donor registrations. Users were given an opportunity to click a box on their Timeline pages to signal that they were registered donors, which triggered a notification to their friends. The new feature started a cascade of social pressure, and organ donor enrollment increased by a factor of 23 across 44 states.
Yup... his ugly med student wife got beta zuck to make more people organ donors. Good to know what they see human beings as.
But hey, it's legal:
Quote:While nobody likes being emotionally manipulated, part of the outrage seems to be due to the fact that Facebook is technically in the right, here. When you sign up for Facebook, you are, in fact, offering up your consent to have your data and profiles used in these kinds of experiments. And as the study notes, since Facebook’s data team used machine analysis to surface the positive and negative posts, it didn’t breach Facebook’s privacy policy.
I was considering returning to facebook when I have something to promote, but now I'm not so sure. They get weirder every day.

Sorry to digress, but I want to point out where typical liberal hypocrisy leads.
This story says FB can do what it wants "because it's a business." Liberals also defended the firing of the Mozilla CEO who was against gay marriage because business can do what it wants. Same went for anyone expressing any anti-gay opinion who got canned.
Well, the Washington Post just reported SWAT teams who raid houses are immune from open records laws...because they're businesses! So, I guess being a business means you can do whatever you want -- le de dah -- and liberals will be right behind you. Great thinking.

RE: Facebook ran psych experiment to make us all organ donors
Where is the evil here?
Quote: Users were given an opportunity to click a box on their Timeline pages to signal that they were registered donors
Keyword: opportunity.
Quote:which triggered a notification to their friends. The new feature started a cascade of social pressure,
So if my friend is an organ donor, I get a facebook notification? Whoop dee fucking do. I'd be surprised if I even saw it in between all the damn farmville or flavor of the month game invites idiots send me.
How do you go from sitting behind a computer and seeing a notification to going through the process of enrolling to be a organ donor? Personal action. You have to physically do something. Nothing is forced upon you.
Quote:While nobody likes being emotionally manipulated
A notification isn't emotional manipulation. It's an icon in the corner of a screen.
Quote:part of the outrage seems to be due to the fact that Facebook is technically in the right, here. When you sign up for Facebook, you are, in fact, offering up your consent to have your data and profiles used in these kinds of experiments.
Well no shit? Welcome to the internet folks, its been here for the past decade. Just about every website your registered with has this same type of policy. Read a terms of use agreement one time, they all are pretty much exactly the same.
Facebook isn't evil.
God'll prolly have me on some real strict shit

RE: Facebook ran psych experiment to make us all organ donors
The issue is not specifically that Facebook manipulated people into becoming organ donors, it's that Facebook has demonstrated both the ability and the willingness to manipulate people without their knowledge or consent. The fact that increased organ donation is almost universally seen as a positive is of no consequence. The danger is not what has been done with this power, but what might yet be done. If you came home from work to find a stranger sitting inside your bedroom offering you a $100 bill, would you be pleased that you were $100 richer, or freaked out that some weirdo broke into your house and was sitting in your bedroom? In much the same way, the fact that Facebook used this power for "good" means nothing, because as we have seen, there is no real basis for morality in progressive society as the goalposts are constantly shifting. The simple fact that they can manipulate not only peoples' opinions but their behavior through this process should be profoundly disturbing to us all. It is nothing less than a form of low-grade mind control, something which the elites have been deeply involved and interested in since the advent of mass media in the early 20th century.
The explosion of the internet, a de-centralized worldwide network that allows for the instantaneous distribution of information independent of the controlled media, was something that elites did not anticipate. For a number of years the technology got ahead of them. They were unable to understand how exactly to control the internet in the same way they were able to control newspapers, radio and television. We are currently in the tail end of this "Wild West" era of the internet, when it is largely still independent, private and de-centralized. The elites have begun to take control of the internet through their control of both corporations (large software companies and telecoms) and government (NSA, FBI). Their strategy has been to exert control on a largely covert basis, through forcing private companies to cooperate with the NSA's demands to create backdoors and other special access to their servers and data pipes.
So we now see that Facebook is used by the elites not only for the purposes of data mining the general public, but for directly manipulating their opinions and behavior. This is the same thing elites have done for years with television , but now they've finally started to figure out how to apply the same strategy to the internet. Facebook has literally become something out of an Orwellian/Huxleyian nightmare, and the fact that so few people recognize that fact is exactly the evidence for it.

RE: Facebook ran psych experiment to make us all organ donors
Scorpion, very well said. You are correct in all the particulars - but is it irrelevant that facebook can only manipulate people with their active participation? A libertarian would say as much, while others might view that as a formality when a platform like facebook has say, a majority of the populace on board. True tyrannies never rule with the active consent of the governed. I'm inclined to think Facebook is too ephemeral and voluntary in nature to have any real power. The greater likelihood is that Mark Zuckerberg's fortune used towards progressive ends.
Also, we are used to seeing a social network as this neutral communication platform, but the founders of these networks aren't content with just building a better telephone. They have a greater vision than that - witness Zuckerberg's giant donations to New Jersey public schools. It was only a matter of time until they deployed their inventions towards such ends, and I don't begrudge them for it. Google's 'don't be evil' has come to mean promoting homosexuality around the world.
The real potential problem with such networks is not so much their manipulation as it is their status as an oligopoly, how they maintain such a dominant share of their respective markets. A diffuse, decentralized market or nation makes tyranny difficult to impossible, but proprietary technologies and networks like Google, Apple, Facebook thrive on centralization and top down control. The best antidote to such networks is either withdrawal or their open source, open access alternatives, where platforms are built from the ground up to prevent any one actor from gaining control.

RE: Facebook ran psych experiment to make us all organ donors
Yes, I don't think the issue is so much Facebook or Google in particular, but that these type of platforms exist and are proven capable of manipulating the public in this manner. A myopic focus on a particular company or technology misses the point. It would be like looking at, say, CBS Evening News in 1970. Would it matter if the U.S. Government was directly feeding Walter Cronkite lines to read on-air? Sure. But the impact of the story wouldn't be that Walter Cronkite and the Evening News were particularly bad, it would be that the practice itself had been uncovered. And the real issue with stories like this is not what you are seeing, what what is left unseen. That is, if we're aware of this, what are they doing that we're NOT aware of at this point?
Which leads us back to Facebook and this story. Who's to say that this type of manipulation hasn't been used already? Could it have something to do with the widespread growth in public approval towards homosexuality over the past few years, much of which has occurred through social networks? Facebook has demonstrated the ability to do such things. Who says they haven't being doing just that, on issues that are much more near and dear to the progressive agenda than organ donation?
The real danger here is not Facebook or Mark Zuckerbeg in particular, it's that Facebook is just the beginning of a new type of progressive thought control exercised invisibly through the manipulation and display of information coursing through social networks.

The real scandal with the NSA revelations was not so much the actual leaks as it was the response of people to them, and to the political establishment's. Presidents and others have been impeached for far less, yet no heads rolled this time around. We're seeing the same thing here.
I'm coming around to your view, I have to say. People like to think that the commercial tech sector is some bastion of free thinking and independence, but it's one of the most uniformly liberal sectors there are, to the point of sheer cowardice. Even in academia, there are a few notable dissenters, or people doing good honest work quietly, eg research on neurological sex differences. While there are some maverick techies I'm sure, they're probably out tinkering on their own or working at small companies.
Still, facebook is icing on the cake in comparison to the vast social distortion wrought by divorce & child support laws, welfare, education subsidies and antidiscrimination law.

It's also extremely interesting that the ownership of the giant internet companies such as Google, Facebook, Amazon, etc closely parallels the ownership of the mass media and entertainment industries. It's fuking uncanny.
