British comedy legend

You would really have to be British and be at least in your thirties to understand how sad this is





We met on the street once back in the 1990s and had a chat and somehow the conversation ended up with dastardly plan to get me laid with a girl I was trying to impress.

Never came to pass but so nice that he had my interests at heart.

The papers are attributed to Harry Paget Flashman, who is not only the bully featured in Thomas Hughes' novel, but also a well-known Victorian military hero (in Fraser's fictional England). The papers were supposedly written between 1900 and 1905. The subsequent publishing of these papers, of which Flashman is the first, contrasts the previously believed exploits of a (fictional) hero with his own more scandalous account, which shows the life of a cowardly bully. Flashman begins with his own account of expulsion from Rugby and ends with his fame as "the Hector of Afghanistan", detailing his life from 1839 to 1842 and his travels to Scotland, India, and Afghanistan.

I knew a couple of lads that were big fans of the series and had also read the books and they told me there was some overlap. The books are pretty famous and well read, so I am told. Then again, they were red-headed Oirish potato pickers, so maybe they were having me on.

I think they might have been right though, Flashheart was a caricatured, over-aggrandized, carbon copy of that type.

A real man's man. Not afraid of not making friends. And not afraid of offending.

Might not have been that funny after all, but at least they didn't get locked up for it, which anyone attempting that kind of shit today, would be.

Still, the bit where he shoots the German (Ade Edmonson - his best friend) always makes me chuckle.

The front pages of the British newspapers have pictures of Rik Mayall walking around yesterday. A few hours later and he's gone.

A sobering reminder.

What a tragedy! He was one of the comedy greats. Blackadder was show filled with hilarious characters, and he was the funniest of them all.

Noooo! I used to watch taped eps of The Young Ones when I was a kid. I could repeat almost the entire script of the episode "Sick" by heart. Which to me still probably is one of the single most perfect 30 minutes of comedy ever made.

The New Statesman is the show that pretty much inspired the Original House of Cards novel/show. You'd probably have to be fairly up on British politics to be able to get everything, still it's a great humorous show on a politician entirely without scruples.
