Being an individual who hates the cultural reliance on social media and being glued to hand-held devices, this definitely resonates with me. Although, I don't agree with all the ideas this article presents. The "satisfice" principle sounds retarded. I think living you life like a normal human has less to do with compromising and more to do with just living in-the-now and reviling in your present experiences.

Think of all the missed opportunities and time wasted by social media. Families and friends all out together staring down at their phones. Kids and young adults alike sitting inside all day or staying up late into the night just to browse dating sites, chat on Facebook, etc. These times could be spent doing things and experiencing real in-person interaction. This time and energy could be spend playing and instrument, building something, writing, learning a craft, just being outside somewhere nice and appreciating the world around you.

We have world-wide communication and knowledge right in the palm of our hands but it makes us so small minded and ignorant. One idea that this article presents that is very interesting to me is this point right here:

I think there may be a fair amount of weight to that... now what the outcome of human social interaction will be like once we have coped with it is a different story. Who knows, really. I know I tend to leave me phone in my car when I go out for a walk, or go to eat with people etc. Whatever is going on with my text messages or phone calls can certainly wait.

I hear they are coming out with a smart phone that lets you actually talk now rather than text. You pick it up, type some numbers, talk into it, and someone else on the other side can hear you. Amazing.

The difference between other message boards and this message board is that here we have a clique of men both intelligent and rational enough to discuss and understand this phenomenon, and with sufficient willpower to take the necessary steps to mitigate the problem.

Multiple members have taken 'time out' as they realised RFV was becoming addictive. Can you see that happening at Jezebel?

Awesome piece.

I think this relates to a lot of things. For instance, I think FOMO is the main source of my drive to drink all the time. I always feel like I'm missing out if I stay in too many nights.

I also think embracing the concepts in this article would help a lot of guys in game who always have high standards. For instance, I'm picky as hell when sober, and I'll brush off or delay easy leads all day and night in search of something better.

Until I get drunk and swoop something that was probably worse than one of my earlier opportunities. Then wake up in the morning and scoot her out the door because I don't want to be seen publicly with her (i.e. she's not good enough for me).

I reckon I'd be more satisfied if I just chilled out, went with the flow, and enjoyed "good enough" without having to reach the debaucherous level where anything will do.

Some interesting food for thought. I'm going to bookmark this piece and read it again, and it would be cool to check out some of the stuff written by the guy who did the studies about optimizers vs people who go for good enough.

Keeping these concepts in mind would also be helpful to those of us constantly searching for that perfect international location.

Good comments. We will probably never find the perfect location, perfect harem, perfect career, etc. The key is to be OK with this as long as you know at each step of the way you are making good decisions.

I agree with the good enough approach for most things. This applies to gaming girls obviously, notches, etc. Set yourself a standard, and then respect this standard.

However, I do think that for a few particular areas in your life you should strive to be the best or nearly so. Those ares are up to you, and they should align with your personal strengths. Maybe this is your physique, maybe this is your career or business. Maybe this is your game. Whatever it is, go strong and go all out. But everything else, go for good enough, but set your standard of "good enough" appropriately tailored to you so you don't sell yourself short.
