Or an irrelevant thing?

Many people have said I behave like a kid and I am unsure whether it means they perceive me as higher or lower on the alphaness scale. Thoughts?

I think the connotations of 'behaving like a kid' are going to be negative more often than not, but the context in which it was said really matters.

If you're a fun, energetic guy it might not be too bad, especially if the people who are saying that are laughing.

If it's being said while you act irrationally and temperamental then it's obviously not a good thing.

Like Katatonic said, in some ways it can be good in that you don't take things too seriously, have fun, and mess around. It can also be negative in that you're immature and irresponsible.

Most people have a stick lodged firmly and deeply into their asshole that it is essentially physically impossible for them to do anything that is "immature" or could get them in trouble or god forbid attention from strangers. Oftentimes it is because people envy others' abilities to simply let go and not give a fuck.

I don't know your situation or who you are so I can't say for sure.

It's whatever you think it is. Right now, it sounds like you're letting other people decide the frame. You should set the frame yourself.

I'd say agree and amplify is your best response regardless of your actual behavior. Make it seem like you're having fun, and that those criticizing you have a stick up their ass.

"So you don't wanna join my kickball team?"

I remember when I was:

broke
lived at home
no car
no job
clothes were dirty
unkempt hair at all hours of the day

and I told this girl a fart joke.
Her response: "You're so IMMATURE."

I was 7 years old, so was she.
How mature are grade schoolers expected to be?
To this day, I get that reply from women, but now they smile.


Asking for equipment at the gym:

SK: Guess what I want today?
Girl: What?
SK: Chicken butt!!!
Girl: You're so dumb
SK: Yeah! Gimme a foam roller, you.

Most of the times, they are hating because they can't control your carefree spirit. But if you're behaving like a spoiled, emotionally unstable brat then it's a bad thing.

My friend's girlfriend says that to me all the time, but I just troll her and make her feel uncomfortable because I don't give a fuck. I know that my friend enjoys it because she's an unremitting ballbuster and he's a silent, musician type. Don't let others get in your head.

If you're into cougars, the youthful vibe is the way to go. And there are no bigger cougars than school teachers and administrators... I had a bit of a "Mrs. Robinson" who was way up in the school hierarchy in my early 20s, and no doubt she was attracted BECAUSE I looked (and probably acted) quite a bit younger than her.

I get told "you are a child" pretty often. Or called ADD.
But its always by people Im sleeping with, because I keep myself entertained... regardless of social appropriateness.
Laughing at my own jokes, childish pranks on strangers, etc.

So I can't complain.
Its a compliment, to me.

If they keep interacting with you after its said, its a plus.
Think Archer, everything Lana complains about with him... is every reason she stays around.

Thanks for all the helpful replies. Here are answers to some of your questions.

No, I haven't been laid in almost 2 years (ever since I came out of an LTR). This is probably why little things like people calling me a kid get into my head. I got laid once in a while in undergrad but that was only because I had a few girls in my social circle. Then I decided to do grad school and it's awfully hard to find girls in your PhD circles. The only way to interact with girls now is to do cold approaches, which I do but haven't yet hit the consistency that's required. I did two months of cold approaches a year ago, which gave me a few numbers, nothing more. Then I stopped because of lack of discipline.

I don't think people call me a kid because I am temperamental. In fact, I often get blamed for being indifferent and not animated enough. If I had to take a guess, I would say that poeple call me a kid because I do not follow social convention very strictly. But that's just a guess.
