I'm really trying to understand style and matching, here. Now, how should shoes relate to pants worn? Dark with light? or vice versa? I'm tired of dressing like complete shit, Its time to fix myself up a bit.

Some rules.
1. When wearing black pants, always wear black shoes. no exceptions.
2. The most versatile color pants you can wear will be gray and navy. any color shoes will go with gray or navy* (*black shoes can go with navy pants but it gives off a military vibe)
3. as for light vs dark, you can pretty much get away with anything. though, as the gray becomes a more charcoal color, you should tone down the brightness of shoe color.
4, charcoal and black are more formal than medium/light gray, navy, and khaki. something to consider based on the setting you will be in.
5. black shoes are more formal than brown shoes.

with all that said, I nearly always wear either a medium gray or navy colored pant. and I almost always wear a non-black shoe (brown, walnut, merlot, oxblood, chocolate, etc). Brown shoes are infinitely more versatile and a lot of guys are afraid to wear brown shoes (the standard poorly dressed corporate drone is in black suit/pants with black shoes) As for socks, I always wear plain navy socks (its a safe bet- goes with everything - I am not a crazy sock guy).

I wear non-Black shoes with Black jeans often enough (grey desert boots and honey tan brogues), and I only ever wear cool/crazy socks. It all depends on the exact colour combination, and how formal your attire is. Rules are meant to be broken, once you know what you're doing.

Here's a tip to step up your pants game: Go a month without wearing blue denim jeans, it'll force you to expand your palette. I haven't worn a pair in maybe 2 years, and have never looked back.

This is a good chart, but in my experience I think black shoes go better with light grey pants and light brown or chestnut shoes go better with dark charcoal pants than dark brown shoes because of the contrast. Notice that it's hard to get burgundy shoes wrong when matching. Burgundy/oxblood shoes are underrated colors, IMO.

I'd like to hear Deluge's opinion on this, but when I wear crazy socks that don't match the color of my pants, I still try to match at least one color in the socks with something else I'm wearing, whether it be my pocket square, tie, shirt, sweater, or scarf.

I don't think about it too much. I don't wear certain socks with certain colour pants because I know they wouldn't look right, It depends a lot on the individual colours. There's no hard and fast rules about this, just follow what looks right in the mirror. 99% of people won't even notice you matching your socks to your outfit perfectly.

I don't think this is frowned on. I've seen some of these before.
They are great baselines for style.
I would even save the ones that I would use the most.
I have had the shoe color to pants chart saved on my phone.
I have a lot of different color pants and shoes.. Its a great reference for when I'm out shopping.

You can't really expect to have all of it memorized on short notice if you don't deal with it every day

I buy most of my jackets and coats off the rack, of course, and usually have to get them tailored so they fit correctly because, as we know, proper fit is crucial. However, one thing I discovered recently is that upgrading the buttons on jackets and coats really makes them look better at very little cost.

Most off-the-rack coats, jackets, and cardigan sweaters from companies like J.Crew, BananaRepublic, Uniqlo, H&M, and other retailers of similar quality come with cheap-looking plastic buttons. Replacing the buttons with bone or horn buttons helps make the jacket look much more expensive. I've even gotten compliments on my buttons. Also, I buy buttons that are a mix of black and brown, so that they will match either black or brown shoes, making the clothing item more versatile. Below are pictures of buttons I've put on my clothes recently. They usually cost between $.50 to $.90 each and I ordered them online.

You can sew the buttons on yourself or get your tailor to do it for you. Most tailors don't charge much for it. My local tailor often does it for me for free because I'm a loyal customer.

I think it helps balance out the stark contrast when you wear black shoes with blue pants if you wear something black up top so as to match the top to the bottom. For example, the guy on the right is wearing a black tie and the guy on the left black sunglasses. Hey everybody I was wondering if you all could help me out.

I'm an American going to Europe this summer and I want to look good. I have gotten my style down pretty good with the button down shirts and the size length. I wear them untucked for a casual look and make sure the button down shirts are even all the way around the bottom of them and don't have the "v" shape towards the bottom of it where it's supposed to be tucked in. However, it will be hot during the summer time in Europe. About me I'm 5'10 and 145 pounds, yes pretty skinny I know. I would much rather wear long sleeve button down shirts, as they fit my frame better since I'm skinny but as I said this might not be a choice in the summer time. So these are my questions:

1. Should I wear short sleeve button down shirts? If so, should the sleeves go just below my shoulders or just above my shoulders? Keep in mind I'm skinny without muscle as well.

2. Should I keep my long sleeve shirts and just roll them up? One of the things I don't want to happen is to get hot as shit in the club.

3. I have a few button down shirts where they are fitted for my neck size (I had it measured at the store), but they're to long at the bottom and have the "v" shape to them at the bottom. Can I take these shirts to a tailoring shop to trim it down so there's no longer a "v" shape at the bottom? Or are tailoring shops only for suits? Furthermore, could I have these shirts made into short sleeve button down shirts? I've had a hard time finding button down shirts that aren't to long on me in stores.

4. Normally with my button down shirts I wear white reeboks and some dark blue jeans with them. I guess this is looked down upon and perhaps I need to upgrade my shoes - would brown "loafers" be ok with a button down blue shirt and blue jeans?

5. In central Europe during the summer time, can I just wear the long sleeve button down shirts without sweating my ass off at night time or will be that be impossible?

6. In Budapest and other capitol central European cities, do they have dry cleaners like they do in the USA? I can have my button down shirts dry cleaned and pressed for a nice $1.50 down the road which saves me time and money. I'm hoping they have laundromats similar to this in Budapest and other capitol European cities?

7. Last question - This might seem like a stupid question. My belt keeps getting a tear in it after a few months. The pants that I have now are are a little loose on my waist. I don't want to go any size lower because then my junk feels uncomfortable and it's to tight for me. I also use the same belt for work (I always have my shirt untucked so nobody ever sees the belt) also. Is it the size of my pants/belt or the stress I'm causing the belt wearing it to work as well as wearing it with my blue jeans causing it to break?

This. Short sleeved shirts strike me as being a bit dorky. Unless you're in a tropical area, but even then you'd be better off in longsleeved linen.

I'm pretty sure they could accomodate you on both counts. I've had blousy shirts taken in at the sides a few times. Your shirt might still flare open slightly after being shortened, but I'd consider that more flattering than a straight line ending.

Loafers are a bit of an 'advanced' move. The OP has solid advice as far as shoes go.

I think it's just bad leather. If you don't want to get into judging good versus bad leather, consider a canvas belt.

I think the blue pants and dark shoes only works because its a bright blue. If it were a dark blue, brown would typically be a better color. For example, see the first pic in this thread. Black shoes just wouldn't work with that.

I also stopped wearing jeans over the last couple of years. But last night I was strolling around in my new stupidly expensive A.P.C. jeans (not entirely sure what possessed me to buy them) and hot girls were giving me hard eye contact all over the place. Might have to start wearing them more, hopefully the balls will thank me later.
