Deciphering Public Transport in the FSU
For the past five months I've been traveling in the FSU. For the first several months it was very difficult to use public transport as I didn't have a good idea of where the various buses, trams, trolleybuses, and minibuses went.

Finally two months ago I found a wonderful site that has helped me immensely in navigation around Russian cities (caveat: I've only used this in Russian cities, so I can't speak to its accuracy outside of the cities I've used it in). I bring you, WikiRoutes. EDIT: It offers the site in "English" but it is pretty much worthless, so it will be in Russian, however, after you get used to the system it is not that big of a deal.

WikiRoutes is both trip planner and route catalog. Here's how to use it:

Step 1: Select your City. They boast 20 countries and 800 cities, most of which are FSU, but there are some western countries as well.

Step 2: Select your Route or Trip planner. If you know the route and what type of vehicle it is, then select your method of transport (right) then the number of the route (center. If you are using trip planner select главная at the top.

Step 3: Trip Planner. For the trip planner simply click where you are coming from (A) to where you are going to (B) and it should generate a list of possible route combinations (click ещё варианты to see additional routes).

Also you can click on the route to get more information about it, as depending on the route it will tell you (with a grain of salt) when the hours of operation are and the entire route it covers.

In my use I'd say it is verily accurate, however, occasionally you will come across a route that no longer exists, so it is wise to have a couple back-up routes if you are going somewhere unusual. If you have any questions or comments (hopefully the attachments work) let me know.

RE: Deciphering Public Transport in the FSU
Well, that's a bit easier than what I am currently doing.
Which is spending 20 minutes staring at the map trying to figure out where I am and where I want to go. Then getting pissed off and going on foot. Then getting pissed at that idea and eventually turning it into a pub-crawl.

The less fucks you give, the more fucks you get.

that's pretty cool. But in the buses, trams and trolley buses in Moscow there is a detailed map of where all the routes for each vehicle goes FYI. And sometimes they have it at the stops as well.

Yeah I never used this in Moscow as the metro took me anywhere I needed to go.
