One of the big reasons the EU can't do shit when it comes to Russia is their huge dependence on Russian energy. A western aligned energy providing Ukraine would be destructive to Russian influence. However the west has shown that they won't go to war over a Russian invasion of Ukraine and thus Putin can snap up this energy lifeline to the west at will. I'm sure the people over at Gazprom are licking their lips over the possibilities.
