News presenter causes storm for calling women out on obesity off-air
This story has been getting some attention in New Zealand the past few days. Rachel Smalley is one of the leading news readers here and made these comments when she thought her mic was off:

Here

'Heifers' are baby cows and 'lard' is a fatty substitute for butter. 72kg is about 160lb.

This created a shit storm of fat acceptance victimization prompting her to make this tearful apology:

I enjoyed how she said the comment was 'out of context' Hamster

She would have got a lot of respect from a growing minority if she had owned her comment however that would have probably damaged her career.

Haha there is only an outrage because New Zealand is full of fat fucks. If the average female was 52 kilos or 115 lbs, no one would care. The fatter the country the greater the outrage.

Laugh Haha, "Lardos". She probably helped some random lardo out there with motivation to hit the gym.

These apologies are never made out of legit sorrow, but embarrassment. Public figures, especially television news personalities, have to play it down the middle so not to take PR hits, which can translate into a ratings hit. And almost EVERYONE that gets busted like this uses the "out of context" defense. What they really need to do with anyone that wears a mic is reinforce the "hot mic" rule...namely, if the mic is still attached to you, SHUT THE FUCK UP. Or if you're still in the studio, where another mic can pick up what you say, SHUT THE FUCK UP. Remember...fatties watch the news too, and watch the commercials that pay the bills. Especially ads for FOOD.
