As I'm moving from Thailand to a yet to be decided place in Asia, I am faced - again - with the sheer annoyance of moving. I have acquired random belongings, will have to deal with the inevitable struggle to get my deposit, moving stuff on airplanes and paying for extra weight etc.

How do you deal with moving locations?

Do you simply choose to live light and not invest too much into your living space or do you have other methods to keep some sense of continuity and ability to move stuff around?

Well depends on your way of life, owning bulking possessions is not part of my "location independent" ethos. I recently moved city within my country and I had one suitcase, and one small backpack and that was it, the rest I left with a friend and will pick it up some day.

Regarding deposit, I always ask my landlord when I sign up if I can use the deposit as my last months's rent.

All apartments I rent have the necessary mod cons

Only have as many things that will fit in your luggage and stay in AirBNB places for months at a time. Surprisingly affordable.

I've been living out of just one backpack for years. Sometimes I end up collecting new belongings when I stay in a new place for a while, but more often than not I end up giving this stuff to a local friend before I leave. Sometimes I drag more shit along but then en route I'll check my priorities and end up leaving everything in the room for staff when I move on. I've also left shit strewn across the world at friends' houses that I'll probably never get around to picking back up.

All that said, after all these years living like that, I've been contemplating adding a suitcase to my inventory so I can at least put together a decent wardrobe. It's a real asset when it comes to dating the higher quality women in new locations (as well as being taken serious business-wise). The idea would be I'd fly into a country with it or fly to major cities, but if I was going on a road trip to do some exploring or checking out minor cities, I'd check it somewhere, head out with just the backpack, and grab it when I come back to fly out again.

In Bangkok, for instance, you can leave a bag at the baggage check in for months at a time and it's a pretty reasonable rate.

We'll see how well I do with the change though. Chances are I'll end up abandoning it somewhere along the way...

Still not sold on this.

The rates I've heard don't sound like that great of a deal compared to furnished apartments in the areas I've been to or researched. The challenge is sometimes finding apartments that will let you do month-to-month, but there are always some that will.

I admit I'm speaking from inexperience here though, as I've never used AirBNB. This is just based on the numbers I've been told. I should probably dig around the AirBNB threads before talking too much shit.

I am changing location in about 3 months.

I have just started throwing shit away. Its no longer winter, so I am chucking all my winter clothes I didn't wear in the last few months.
Books, give them away.
Trinkets and shit you collect because you thought they were cool for 5 minutes.... Throw them!
Sell your furniture and stuff like that.

You can always do 2 trips with all your clothes and shit.

A good thing to remember is that if airlines are wanting to charge your like... $800 for an extra 15kg of luggage... Sometimes its cheaper to just book a business class ticket and they will let you take an extra bag of 20kg with you (of course this all depends on the airline).

But in short.... There is no easy way.

It works for a while, but imo after a while you like to keep some continuity. It is of course easier by keeping most of your stuff digital and your memories and contacts too, but physical stuff is more 'real' and connects better to your mind in my experience.

Sold my scooter yesterday, sad to see it go actually. I got attached to it like an old horse or something.
