There's quite a few of these types of videos on the net, and people always get emotional about it. It must be amazing, as an adult, to experience hearing for the first time.

There are some videos of kids getting these implants as well, but children seem to always react with terror and fear.

Thats awesome. You can clearly see how much it means to these people to be able to hear. They have went their who lives in silence... It mush be such a amazing feeling!

I get a little emotional watching videos of joyous things such as this and my eyes water up a bit.... Is that beta?

These videos are great. I too get a tear in my eye when I watch them.

The ironic thing is that alot of these people will go away, say a prayer and thank God for what happened.

Science and Religion are quite compatible, actually.

Many scientists are deeply religious. Most atheists are scientifically illiterate.

God exists as long as people believe in Him. In the old days before Christianity, the gods were ideas. If you were in love, you were under the influence of Eros or Cupid, for instance.

Can you touch love? No, but you can feel it. You can see it in others, when a woman caresses her baby, for example. It's the same with God. It's software, not hardware. Thus, looking for a physical embodiment of Him is pointless. As pointless as trying to touch your laptop's operating system.

Yeah not to rain on the parade here, but in that first video the nurse is like "you accomplished so much!"

How about the scientist who studied the problem?
How about the inventor who designed the thing?
The technology that went into its design?
How about the doctor who operated?

You know how girls are turned on by a deep voice...imagine hearing that for the first time, i bet they are like "whoooooooo"

Remember the videos on this thread the next time someone utters the ultimate ingrate idiocy along the lines of "technological progress is meaningless, it's just more toys" etc.

Human beings are whiners and ingrates by nature and that is fine, but sometimes the spell of stupidity can be broken and one sees, through hot tears of gratitude, the awesome reality of what progress truly means.

Electric currents in a chip are also quantifiable and measurable, which does not mean that you can touch your operating system. Software has a physical embodiment, but it's still intangible.

You're not attacking my point, but confirming it. Love is an idea. So is God. If ideas have a real impact by being believed by a collective of people, then they do exist. The word "god" is just an old name for "idea". Hence, the gods exist. We cannot see them, but they are with us. Eros is with us when we fall in love, for instance. The fact that we get high on love is the proof that Eros exists.

In the old days, our "unenlightened" ancestors sacrificed goats to please, say, Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture, hoping she would give them a good harvest. Today, modern "progressives" sacrifice women in the workplace to please the God of Equality, and have the gall to call themselves atheistic. They also want to sacrifice women on the battlefield to please the very same god. And millions of lives are destroyed to please the God of Economic Growth, as if economic growth always implied an increase in the quality of life of a population.

Humans need a religion. The abstract ideas that move modern humans are our modern gods.
