Seems like something mosty for the benefit of their own internal political considerations. When people start to make demands of governments, governments start saber-wrattling. Something to keep in mind on the Ukrainse threads.

You are right. It is mostly for domestic consumption and a "see how you like it" kind of point because we keep a whole fleet parked of their coast in Bahrain. Propaganda like when the US sent the "white fleet" to Japan just way less intimidating.

They've announced they were going to do this two or three times before but never followed through. So maybe they've figured it out this time.

As a side note, this is why I view these America-gets-invaded movies (e.g., Red Dawn) as ridiculous. We are the LAST country on earth any foreign power would try to occupy, and it's not because of our standing army.

Indeed. Ironically, that's why most movies feature USA being invaded by aliens, as that's the only remotely realistic possibility for an occupation there.
