Study showing the progression of the obesity epidemic over the course of the last century. Prior to the 1900s average weight was relatively static. Beginning in the early 1900s average weight began increasing.

In the 1800s, the average 19yo. Cadet had a BMI of 19. About 80% were under a BMI considered "normal" by the CDC.

As a guy who used to have a 19BMI, I can tell you that people reacted to me with shock and concern. Yet the whole time i was perfectly healthy, and in another century, would not have raised an eyebrow.
