I know ZMA contains them both together. But I've already been taking zinc and since Mg just came in, I don't want to limit its absorption in any way. I want to be able to notice the difference it makes (if any).

You should take them with food. I got a wicked bad heartburn from taking zinc on an empty stomach.

^ Be particularly cautious about taking zinc on an empty stomach. I've made the mistake and was left dry heaving for 30 minutes thinking I got food poisoned. I take the 30mg optizinc. However, it seems some people are immune to this. Here's an article by Mayoclinic, which says take zinc separate from food, unless you get stomach pain. Magnesium seems to be fine taken on an empty stomach and strangely enough same goes for ZMA (even though it contains zinc). I often use a topical magnesium during my IF fasted window. There's theories that zinc and calcium compete for absorption sites and to avoid calcium products while consuming zinc.

According to the ZMA I recently bought this seems to be what the instructions recommend. I haven't had any issues so far.
