Usually the question is in the form of "So, what do you do?"

So I always like to redirect: "You mean like for fun or for work?"

This puts her on guard of not wanting to seem like a like a gold digger by saying "for work".

They almost always say "Oh, for fun" and I have about a trillion things I like to do so I just rattle off about whatever but...if they say "For work." I like to look slightly disappointed and say, "Oh, psst. Well, have you seen those 'Every kiss begins with Kay' commercials? (All the girls down in TX have as it is a very popular jewelry store here) Well, when the camera pans away and you see the hands with rings? That's me. I'm a hand model."

About 2/3rds of the time they believe me and I'll say, "See, check out these beauties..." and get her to hold one of my hands.

When they seem incredulous I'll stick with the story and act offended that they don't believe me and have a good time with it.

After a few minutes I will almost always tell them what I really do but I have hooked-up with girls that thought I was a hand-model until the very end.

I see nothing wrong or tacky with asking what a person does for work. You ARE what you do. You ARE what you eat, and you ARE what you fuck.

If she's asking it's because she's interested (investing as WIA eloquently says) in you. You can respond however you feel fit to at the moment.

I ask girls this question very soon after meeting them, because their answer will tell me much about them.

Yes the question could be an IOI but more likely a filter\ shit test. She may not even be conscious of what is going down - best to error on the light hearted side initially , yes of course we will both find out each others occupations at some point

As with most things in game, there is no ABSOLUTE rule, but it is a great general guideline to brush off questions from time to time, especially if they're qualifier questions (which this one usually is).

You know what the girl I'm dating right now knows about my work? She knows I work relatively close to her (we meet up for lunch on occasion), she knows the GENERAL type of business I work in, and she knows that I have a dog at my work a lot of the time.

Why does she know these things? Because they've been relevant or assumed when I've talked to her about other things (such as meeting up for lunch). The thing she knows the most about my work? The dog. She knows about the dog because why would I bore her with the specific details of my job? She's much more entertained and intrigued by the cute dog at my work or whatever random shit that happened versus the fact that my boss frustrated me with some stupid bullshit, or that I'm overworked/underpaid, or that my title is probably higher than what I actually do day to day most of the time.

The only time she'll ever see my work is if all my coworkers are gone and she can come over on her lunch break so I can fuck her silly in the room with one-way mirrored glass overlooking the street, because she'll remember that moment, not that my workplace overall is a dirty, far from fancy place.
