I overheard a conversation from an acquaintance about the government trying to keep it's citizens from leaving the states, and at first I didn't believe it but I did a little google search and found this:

The Ex-Patriot Act

For a more brief explanation of the bill check here and yes the title of the article makes me want to hit the author with a rubber mallet.

"Any ex-pat with either a net worth of over $2 million, or an average income tax liability of at least $148,000 over the last five years, "will be presumed to have renounced their citizenship for tax avoidance purposes."The ex-pat will have to demonstrate to the IRS that this is not the case if it is not. If there is a "legitimate reason" for that person living outside the U.S. no penalties will apply. But if the IRS finds that someone gave up their passport for tax purposes, they will impose a tax on that individual's investment gains no matter where he or she resides."

Key points of interest from the bill are as follows:

-Targets expatriates who have left the country for the purpose of avoiding taxes, and will subject them to a 30% future capital gains tax.The tax detailed this act, if approved, will backdate for 10 years after its approval.

-Banish any former US citizens who fall under the description outlined in the bill.

This bill died shortly after its introduction in 2012 because it was clear that the original intention of the bills creation was to go after one of the facebook founders who bounced after he liquidated his assets in a legal manner avoiding taxes, but this is the kind of stuff that comes out before they start clamping down on the average ex-pat who is far from being a billionaire. It doesn't look like they're finished either here's what another source says about the creator of the bill:

"It would seem that Chuck Schumer, the Democratic Senator from the State of New York, has learned a few tricks from Carl Levin about gaming the U.S. legislative process. Now, instead of trying to get his bill to pass on its own merits, he’s snuck it into an existing bill with a greater chance of passing — just as FATCA died in committee before being snuck into the HIRE Act."

They should rename it the butthurt law. I don't think anyone that was assessed some sort of magic 30% tax would set foot in the US again anyway for fear of being detained and made to pay.

I thought that the whole point of the second amendment was to protect against cases where folks were taxed without representation.

Do you anticipate having your right to vote taken away?

There will be certain countries that the USA will not be able to fuck with, like Russia and China. For example, Snowden seems pretty safe in Putin's Russia.

The main problem with an "ex-pat tax" law (assuming it gets passed) will be if you run off to a small country with strong economic/diplomatic ties to the USA. Then they will be able to put the screws to you.

Agreed. I've been holding on to ammo, food, water storage, guns, and ammo. Even in an urban environment I'm still ahead of most.

Liberal types are parasites.Parasites can't survive without a host.The host are leaving and the parasites know that when all the host are gone then all the parasites will die.All the bullshit social programs that libs use to buy off voters with are funded by wealthy people.No wealthy people,no social programs.No social programs(welfare,subsidized housing etc),no democrat votes and thus no liberal utopia.

Via FATCA. Foreign banks have signed on to withold taxes at the request of the IRS and remit them. They'll just say "oh yes, Germanico owes us the new ex pat tax" and they will send it on over and you can then go to tax court to argue for it back.

Considering that my vote(the one that counts) is where I decide to put my dollars I'm under the impression that these bozos are giving thought to that possibility yea. Suddenly they find people quitting on them and going their own way with their cash that's as good a vote of disapproval as any.

There's never been a 100% foolproof method of getting out of the U.S. All the IRS has to do is claim you owed for a year prior to renouncing your citizenship and off you go. And the gov't can and has snatched people they want. You'll get roofied and wake up on a flight with men in suits to the nearest U.S. point of interest.

And like machininst pointed out, the rich has to keep paying for the poor. Ironic how they are not allowing the wealthy to flee, but want to let illegals continue to stay in country and not pay into the tax system, but use social programs. Viva la revolucion!

True, this is why you're supposed to get a tax clearance notice before you leave showing that all of your tax debts are paid. How many people know thats even a thing? not a lot I venture.
