According to this Wall Street Journal video report, the teen "addressable user base" on Facebook has declined 25% since 2011.

The 55-and-older Facebook demographic has grown 300% over the same three-year time period. Teens are switching in massive numbers to Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, and other types of social media. Apparently, they want to get away from all the older people who are taking over Facebook.

I would be interested to hear the forum's thoughts on how Game should evolve, if at all, to address these changes.

As someone who was in High School about two years ago, I could've told anyone who asked that Facebook was gonna be dead soon. At it's peak, Facebook on a Sunday night was where the party was at. EVERYONE would be online at the same time, chatting and posting status updates and whatnot. This was mostly my Sophomore and Junior years. Nowadays, the only people that post statuses on my Facebook are the adults I'm friends with (adults as in the parents of my friends and old teachers I have added) and weird people that still do the "like my status" kind of stuff. You have as good a chance of getting in contact with someone sending an Facebook Message than you would sending an email. Hell, I'd guess you have a better chance sending them snail mail.

A big reason I think this happened was that peoples Facebooks was becoming too much of an accurate representation of themselves. Facebook was everything: your friends, your school, your age, your family, pictures of where you were, where you've been, what you're thinking, your beliefs, your relationship status, etc. It's much easier for people to create constructs of themselves when there are two avenues: Twitter, for your thoughts and Instagram for your photos. I noticed that I don't see girls having 15 minute photoshoots at the beginnings of parties anymore, because no one posts entire photo albums of a night out anymore. Most girls take one picture of their night at some point, and put that on Instagram.

I don't think Game will need to make much of a change. No ones going to be deleting their Facebooks because it's too connected to everything that they use. Nowadays, it's used as more of an ID card that says "yeah, I'm a normal human being".

I agree with dads on this. I took about a year off from FB but decided to come back on to keep in touch with people. It was an entirely different FB and it has slowed down a lot since then. The only people who post anymore are people who like to shove religious/political views down others throats. All the girls who used to post 5-10x a day seem to be pretty non existent outside big events.

At some people I think there will be a big scramble for privacy. All these companies are linking everything up and people are getting tired of it. Eventually Google will get their hands on FB which might be the final straw.

I've been on Facebook since December 2004, the first year that it was in operation.

It used to be underground and cool, if you can believe it.

Nowadays, your mom will friend you on Facebook.

It's a completely different beast. I remember the excitement of meeting my first bitch through Facebook, how it seemed a bit dangerous, a bit underground, and definitely novel.

Facebook is still useful for keeping in touch, but I implore people to view the Facebook as it exists today as something of a downgrade.

I want something more dangerous than what Facebook has become. Where can I find that?

Agree with dads 2010/2011 was the year of the Facebook. I remember tons of chats statuses, meme wars, and a bunch of other stuff. There was a lot of community at the time. Last year I noticed that Facebook seemed to have all but died. Even the drama queens and girls who used to post 100+ pictures really tapered out. Stuff became more about generic statuses and select pictures.

While I don't know if this was because of adults I think they played a part in it. A friend of mine once changed his status to "in a relationship" and some relative tagged him and the girl in an embarrassing "I'm so proud that [friend] finally found a girl" status. Little things like that started popping up and I think it made people think twice about posting.

Also, I suspect that the novelty of social media has died off. For several years people were infatuated with it because it was something new and gave them a unique way to express themselves. I remember going to parties and having girls ask for friend requests. Now everyone has Snapchat, Tinder, Twitter, Instagram, Kik, Vine, and 30,000 other social media outlets. They don't really care about a singular one anymore.

The thrill of getting a "like" or whatever has been diluted by all the other types of stimulus that newer services have to offer.

Game wise I don't think it will matter. I deleted my account some time ago and nothing has suffered. If you were into social media game just find a new system like Twitter or Instagram.

A girl came up to me at a party in 2010 and asked for my FB... I told my friends years later and she didn't believe me.

We'd probably be better off if social media no longer existed, but we could still benefit from all of the positive features of the Internet like free and readily accessible information.

Paul Theroux once said something like, the Internet has probably been good for business, but bad for literature. Overall the Internet has probably had a deleterious effect on Western society. On the other hand, though it's hard to quantify such things, it may have spurred democracy in places that really need it.

It's easy to forget that there are places where you can be tortured for opposing a political figure... so even though I sometimes hate the Internet, I'm glad that there are people out there who can use it to better their lot in life in ways that were impossible before.

I signed up for Facebook back in 2005 when I was about to start my first semester at university. I remember back then it was pretty much catered towards college students. You could automatically see the profiles of every student who is in the same college network at you and I remember people would straight up put their dorm and room number on their profile along with the exact section for all the classes they were taking. It was pretty much a stalker's paradise back then which is in stark contrast to how worried everyone these days is over FB privacy.

There is a big reason FB is dying, young people don't like to be in the company of their parents and the like, FB used to be cool when only college and HS people were in it, now you have more family network, also the amount of bullshit women post is killing for. any cute video, prank or Marilyn Monroe's quote is posted 3 time in a day by some females, also, for those who are not married and without kids FB is really pointless, I see the big whores from my high school talking about motherhood and family, girls that were riding the cock and giving blowjobs since they were 13, now they post pictures how a real man is a man that has one woman and dedicated himself to his family, girls that were getting fucked by thugs and drug dealers and the last thing in theirs mind was family commitment and stability.

Now they criticize any man who is not adapting to theirs schedule.

One thing Facebook and other social media have done is spread the feminism virus that much faster. Girls like and share that stuff (images, posts, whatever) and it goes viral really quickly, sometimes in different languages but mostly in English.

I'll routinely have two-three people on my Facebook like the same thing, but one of them is from the US, one is from Germany and one from Russia, for example.

One other thing that's been touched on here is the ego validation that a girl can get via Facebook/Instagram. Now not only can she see the rich lifestyles of the first world, but also get likes from thirsty betas in those countries, and it makes her value go through the moon in her own eyes.

I think you also need to pay for posts to be seen by everybody on your friends lists. There is a much smaller spread and you also don't see as many posts from you friends now and more from paid advertisers.

Ya, I joined in 2005 and for a couple years, it remained extremely clean. It stayed cool until they began to allow general membership and my younger sister, still in high school, got an account.

It wasn't that long after that that the GUI began to suffer from increasingly frantic "reboots" and at some point, Facebook just became a pamphlet for numerous corporations.

I think that the cool factor dropped the most, when stupid games, like Farmville, made their debut. The constant messages from friends "requesting" that you play the stupid game that they were playing so that they could cash in on special referral bonuses, sent Facebook into a downward spiral.

This is why Facebook bought Instagram. Facebook dosn't care if you people think one is cooler then the other as they both bring in money and achieve the end goal for Facebook of total content aggregation for each person.

For the person whom actively participated and filled Facebook with info and content since 2005 and has graduated now to taking a thousand pictures in IG and having each photo she likes or views documented all she is doing is just giving them more of what they want.

Facebook isn't worried by this trend I assume. And for older people I see value in then just keeping a simple FB to keep in touch with family and friends.

After Timberlake bought it, they try to make it cool again, it mostly used by bands and artists, the new user interface is aimed at the mobile demographic, the main purpose now is music, which is useless since most people just download music to theirs phones.

@dads good post and an accurate representation I think. Facebook was at one stage an outlet for teenagers etc to network with their friends and be the little wankers they really are while preventing family members from seeing it - they could be who they really were. As soon as family started signing up, they had to modify their Facebook profiles into the 'good' versions of themselves. I see mainly businesses registering for Facebook now.

My prediction is that Facebook will be dead or at least a shell of its former self in five years... sucks to be anyone who invested in it.

I wonder, did the survey ever adjust for age, or the shift of age demographics?
A 15 yr old now and a 15 year old back in 2009 is two completely different things, and with the way tech progresses, it might as well be a completely different world within those age groups.

On top of that, on Facebook, privacy is a bit of an issue. Those teens aren't exactly keen on sharing how their (illegal) weekend was if their future employer and their parents are watching.
