Aitzaz Hasan, 17, died in the attack on the school in the village of Hangu, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

He was seen running after the suicide bomber moments before a huge explosion.

Hundreds of students and teachers were in the school at the time.

His father said Aitzaz made a sacrifice to save the lives of others.

"My son made his mother cry but saved hundreds of mothers from crying for their children," he told the English-language Express Tribune newspaper.

Scores of mourners attended the teenager's funeral and a Facebook page has been set up in tribute to his bravery.

Local resident Miqdar Khan said many people in the district have hailed Hasan as a hero, adding that the teen was known for openly criticising militants.

"Aitzaz Hasan used to tell all that one day he would capture some suicide bomber and his class fellows used to laugh," he said.

"But this boy proved what he said and I am sad that he left us too early."

Activist Malala Yousufzai, who was herself shot by the Taliban in Pakistan, has pledged to donate almost £5,000 to Hassan's family.

"Sacrificing his own life, Hasan saved hundreds of innocent young students from getting killed; I feel proud of his pious and courageous act. I wish his sacrifice brings peace to my people and my country," she said.

There a growing calls on social media for Hassan to be given a posthumous award for bravery.

Hats off to this kid for his bravery. Makes me pretty damn grateful that I was able to go to school not having to worry about a crazed fuck busting in on class and blowing me up.

"Many people are coming to see me but if they try to express sympathy, I tell them to congratulate me instead on becoming the father of a martyr." It is encouraging to see that there are still those who hold honor in high regard.

The kid out-martyred a would-be martyr, snatching his moment at the very end. That'd be like bringing a girl home, getting cockblocked at the last minute by your own roommate, and having him bang the chick that night--on the top bunk of your shared beds--while you listen.

This is white knighting done right - protecting and helping those who really need help, not because it'd make you feel better about yourself or someone hurt someone's feelings. I was also pleasantly surprised how the family and friends responded - westeners can talk all they want about "dirty raping third-worlders", but you can bet your ass they'd be the first to cry victim and collapse under fear and pressure. News like this make me feel much better - there are still men who have remained men and they piss all over bullshit western "morality" and "equality"!

Yes, and it really shows how pussified the West is. The guy who shot that camp up in Norway was confronted by two Chechen boys who had seen the civil war. They refused to let their friends die without at least attempting to fight back. Now, they failed and were wounded, but not a single other person even attempted to subtly resist against the guy.

The kid died so that hundreds others may live. His was a truly selfless act, and as you put it, white knighting done correctly.

Who gets dibs on the 72 virgins? Or does the culprit get any? Jokes aside, this boy is a hero! His father is also a classy guy with his remarks. Hopefully, the Pakistanis can unite and flush out those mother f'ers who are trying to bring Pakistan down.
