How to age well and delay hitting the wall:

1) Lift weights consistently while avoiding injury (the latter is especially key at 30+)
2) Sleep 7-8 hours per night
3) Eat a clean diet and take quality supplements
4) Don't get too much sun, especially on your face (use SPF and wear hats when outdoors)
5) Apply moisturizer to your face prior to sleeping
6) Drink in moderation, avoid hard drugs and smoking
7) Reduce stress as much as possible (career choice is important here, do something you like)
8) Keep your mind sharp by constantly reading and learning new things
9) Avoid negative/dramatic/toxic/unhealthy people as much as possible
10) Make friends with (and mentor) younger men, and date younger women

Doing these things will take you about as far as your genetics will naturally allow and are within the reach of all men. At 40+ you can consider TRT, which can be a huge boon (but I'm not an expert on that, go read old MikeCF posts or Danger & Play to learn more about it).

By making good choices and living a disciplined lifestyle, there's no reason men can't remain strong, healthy and virile well into their 50s and beyond. It's really up to each man to decide how he's going to age. I've seen some guys in their mid 50s who you'd hardly guess were 40, because they took such good care of themselves and maintained a youthful vibe. On the other hand, I've seen 50 year olds who look 70 because they've ran themselves into the ground with lifestyles of high stress, substance abuse and general physical neglect. At the end of the day, you will end up with the body you deserve based on the lifestyle you've lived.

20k and he doesn't look any better.. the hair style, piercings, the goatee/shaped beard, the sunglasses..terrible all around. And he still looks balding.

If he instead spent $60 on a cordless clippers and shaved it to a #1 every week, lost all the facial jewelry, got rid of the goatee and replaced it with 3 day stubble, got better sunglasses that aren't gold with blue lenses.. he'd look miles better and have 20k in his pocket.

Sometimes guys fixate on one thing they don't like when they could/should maximize everything else and it would negate that one downside.

I agree. I've got gray hair and it's bugging me, but I can't bring myself to "fix" it. As a gym rat since college with decent genetics, I'm in better shape than most of the dudes I know who are about to hit 50, like I am. But hours in the gym doesn't stop the gray.

Lucky for me, I have thick head of hair, but a few years ago I started getting the gray temples, and now I've got the salt-and-pepper throughout, and it is pushing me into the wall. The obvious solution would seem to be "Just for Men," but I refuse to dye my hair.

Supporting Anecdote: A guy in my office who is my age colored his hair (this dude is 2nd to the CEO, way flush, he can afford the best dye job out there), but you could still tell something was "off with his coif," and people were laughing at him around the water cooler because everybody knew he was a man coloring his hair.

At some point I read "All older women color their hair, but men should never do it. It doesn't matter how good the dye job is, women can spot it a mile away." This definitely seemed to apply to the guy in my office, so I took this to heart and decided I'd just accept the gray and control the other aspects of my appearance best I could.

I'm not losing any sleep over it, but before gray hair makes one look "distinguished," it makes one look older, and there's a huge temptation to fix it. But, a fake and phony dye job, the "Dorian Gray" route, is definitely not my style. If I was not in an LTR, and was on the market, maybe I'd feel differently. But I doubt it.

All the gray hair whining aside, "At what point do men hit the wall?" I have to say I agree with the previous posters who say, "When they stop caring/when they give up." The male human body is incredible -- like the chisel my grandfather gave me when I got into woodworking. "Jay, if you take care of it and keep it sharp, it will last you a lifetime."

I've used a drawers worth of different brand moisturizers as well, these days I stick to Kiehl's. They have a variety of good stuff.

I want to disagree with this very badly, but in America this is probably sadly true.

I use plain old extra virgin coconut oil. Take like a nickel size worth rub it in and wipe excess off with a tissue. Works very well.

If it makes you feel better- I think the actual curve of the decline is off and should be a lot less steep. A '9.5' at 40, but having it decline to a '7' at 45 seems bit rich.

For women, the curve should be much more steep.

Very solid advice.

I think that men can and unfortunately often do hit the wall, usually in their 20s or 30s. The difference, as a man, is that if you take care of yourself, you can avoid that fate for a whole. A woman usually can't avoid it.

So for the typical guy, the Wall usually approaches before 30.
For the guy who takes care of himself, the Wall is around 50.

You're lucky to be a man. Just remember that.
