Wow - so basically, If I were to learn Russian at an intermediate level, I can get by not only in 8 countries that speak Russian, but also survive in Ukraine and Bulgaria with speaking/understanding Russian.

If you can Russian very well, you can understand the written bulgarian, but spoken bulgarian is another story. The pronounciation and grammar is different. It's like italian and spanish, maybe even closer.

I speak english and spanish fluently, and I'm advancing in portuguese now,
after that I'll learn intermediate french and I should be able to speak to pretty much anyone i ever need to.

You'll pick up Portugese fairly quick, it is extremely similar to Spanish. French is too.

French seems a bit different, and much harder than Spanish and Portuguese to me. But once you know spanish and you start to get the pronunciation of Portuguese, it should be easy to learn. I'm learning Spanish very quickly here in Miami. At least understanding it. I need to learn to speak though.

Not a lot. And those who do speak English as well.

French isn't that useful outside of France & Quebec, but it is often spoken as a second language. I've used it in Morocco, with people in Portugal, an Argentinian girl and Africans all over. It's also somewhat useful in Vietnam/Laos/Cambodia and in Tahiti. A lot of documentation is also often in French for some reason.

German was pretty useful in Hungary and Poland and all over Eastern Europe and helps you to read/decipher text in Holland/Belgium and Scandinavia. Billig (cheap) is the same word in German and Swedish, and Dutch is like a mix of English and German. German is also pretty useful in science.

The big three for me, I think are: Spanish, Russian and Portuguese. Those three cover the largest amount of countries that I have a particular interest in. I would like to be able to communicate proficiently in all three of them within the next five years.

After that: French, German, Italian, Japanese (in that order) would all be nice to either know or know a little bit of... if I'm still studying languages after the first three, then I'll move on to them. If not... meh.

I'm pretty happy with my Spanish (although it could be better), and started studying Russian a few months ago (it's hard). Plan on spending 4-6 weeks in St. Petersburg this year and taking classes while I'm there.

Spanish - Access to Latin America, all of it.
French - France, city of Quebec, African countries.

For me I'd like to learn Spanish, Portuguese and Russian. I'd be content with just spanish and portuguese though. Learning russian would be an excessive time investment for somewhere which I may only visit a handful of times.

What is up to everyone I was googling the internet for some info about Columbia and found that forum which turned out to be a pick up forum Looks quite less filled with "mpua weirdos".

Mixx,I'm actually Bulgarian myself and was thinking whether to pick up Spanish or Russian as a 2nd foreign language after my poor attempts and lack of motivation to learn German.I started learning Spanish and am going to Russian in a few weeks to prepare for my trip to Eastern Europe.
But keep in mind that Russian is spoken in Russia,Belarus,Latvia,Estonia,Ukraine and by the Russian immigrants world wide.But as far as Bulgaria goes,English is definitely the most popular foreign language,followed by Russian and German.Some people speak French and Spanish too but not veeery small number..What can help you survive and even thrive in Bulgaria is me But I'm graduating high school this year,leaving in end of May probably.At some sea resorts in the end of May it's full of barely legal,having just graduated hotties And in the peak season you have Scandinavian+Bulgarian+other Eastern European at our seaside.So if you want EE pussy+hot weather no need to learn Russian or go to ex USSR.PERIOD.
