Jumping jacks for fat loss

On top of my strength training, I am going to to this every day. I tried it for the first time today and it's pretty tough.

RE: Jumping jacks for fat loss
I read somewhere that jumping jacks were better for burning fat than windsprints. Can't vouch for the veracity of that statement but I'd say they definitely tear through fat.

Make sure you wear your sneaks if you're doing them on a tile floor though. They're pretty high-impact and can be hard on the knees if you don't have something to absorb the shock.

Yeah it will. I'm taking things one step at a time. I started with the strength training, added healthier eating a couple of months ago, and now I'm into stopping drinking. Three huge steps there. A few jumping jacks every day is nothing. I think most people who fail when changing their lives do so because they try to do too many things at once.

if you enjoy them that's fine but you do not need to do jumping jacks at all to lose bodyfat. you could just eat less food and get the same result.

I remember doing jumping jacks for muay thai. It can really get you tired, good exercise. As mentioned before, it requires no space, and the jumping really gets you huffing and puffing. We did 90 second intervals, followed by a burst of knee raised running on the spot, there must be a better term for that.

Are you serious right now or do you know Horus and I'm missing something? Huh Sorry calihunter, but your posts in this thread so far are coming across a little trollish.

There are plenty of instances of people coming on this forum and saying they're going to accomplish something and then following through with it. And plenty of other experts who would also call it an effective motivational technique (the book is hardly closed on the matter).

If we're going to start telling each other to shut up and "just do it" when they post about new things they're actually trying, what is the point of us being here? Mental masturbation and talk about "theories?"

The articles you've linked look interesting, but they would have served a much better function if you'd have made a thread about the concept instead of crapping on some guy's effort to improve himself and sharing his tip with the rest of us.

Yes!

Jump roping > jumping jacks.

Double unders, hopping on one foot for a period of time, switching off after one hop on each foot, criss-crossing, etc.

Good for coordination, timing, endurance, footwork, etc.

Depends on what you're going for. If you're a fighter rather than someone just trying to lose weight, yeah, the jump rope is probably better for the footwork, etc, as mentioned. But I believe I came across a study somewhere though showing that, contrary to popular belief, jumping jacks are more effective for fat loss (I can't back this up but I know it's at least a subject of debate).

People tend to underestimate them but they work your entire body so it doesn't take much to get the heart rate up and turn it into interval training. Stand up for a sec and do a few 30-second or 1-minute runs with them going hard, with elbows locked, not bent, and clapping hands over the head. You get a sense of what they're worth then.

In any case, I think either will do the trick given you set the right pace and sequence, so probably not worth a value judgement. I'm sure the difference is minimal.

As always, doing something is a great step in the right direction, so I say stick with whatever gets you moving.

Sweet. Looks like you've got a place to intelligently discuss your theories on the matter.

Agreed. We should be here to support one another. Not in the 'you-go-girl' that fatties do to each other to STOP themselves improving, but genuine goodwill and support. At least that's what I thought was the deal here.

Not being like the bitter, stifling friend or parent saying "You'll never amount to anything kid, just accept what God's set out for you, marry the girl over the road and work in the factory".

If you're really serious about fat loss then do tabata burpees.

20 seconds of burpees, 10 seconds of rest. x 8

4 minutes of hell.

That looks like hell and awesome at the same time. When I build up some fitness with jumping jacks I will consider this.

And I'm not too worried about calihunter. The links are interesting and actually helpful. But in my experience the best way to make sure I get something done is to suggest that I'm not capable - I find it motivating.

Bringing this thread back just to comment on these: they fucking suck.

I mean that in a good way...sort of. College football introduced me to them. We'd do them in the weight room after lifts and as punishment whenever we didn't go hard on the field or in the gym (or whenever the coaches were just in a bad mood). I never did the Tabata structure; instead, we usually did 4 quarters + overtime, 30 seconds between quarters and each quarter had 25 of these fuckers. Pure hell, they never got easier.

I left the game a couple of years ago but wanted to keep in shape. Aside from buying some dumbells and using the treadmill and bench set in my basement, I also do these. They were especially useful while in college where I had no treadmill - I could just knock them out in my dorm. I still do them and they still haven't got any easier, but I am more ripped than I was a couple of years ago. I'll never stop doing them - I figure that as long as I can keep doing sets of 25 x 4, I'll be able to tell I'm still in decent shape.

I highly recommend these to anybody looking to kick themselves into shape. They're miserable even without the Tabata structure, but they'll get you right. Jumping jacks are cool too, but I don't think they're quite as effective.

Know your enemy and know yourself, find naught in fear for 100 battles. Know yourself but not your enemy, find level of loss and victory. Know thy enemy but not yourself, wallow in defeat every time.

RE: Jumping jacks for fat loss
Anything more than you're doing now will help. I used to box and jumping jacks was a warm up to our stretching before we jumped rope and shadow boxed; jump jacks got the blood flowing for sure. I have to agree though that once you're able to do burpees there's not much better in terms of cardio and explosive strength that you can do in a small footprint. Do ten burpees between 2 min rounds of skipping rope or jumping jacks for an extra push. Have fun with it!
