Yeah I'm sure at least a third of the people I shared the library with today were homeless or near it.

A good thread idea, I guess, but I won't be going back to the library to game anytime soon.

Facepalm

People are missing the point entirely here. This is not a game thread. The fact that the thread is located in the "Knowledge, Arts, and Letters" folder should be a dead giveaway.

It is a thread about how to improve yourself as a man, including using the public library to learn a new language or to start a new business venture that might make a load of dough. It is a well-guarded secret that being able to speak to a woman in her native tongue and being able to flash a little swag might make you attractive to the local lizards. Wink

I worked in ILL when at uni. Still go there to read current periodicals. Beats loitering at the newsstand.

You know, Roosh has a joke line in one of his books about how he "spends time reading books at the book store because the library is too dirty." It's funny but also true. The book store has everything the library has except more up to date, fewer homeless people, more hot girls and better snacks.

When I was a door-to-door canvasser in random towns I used to find the local public library on my map and go there to hang out. I'd try to dupe the librarians into letting me use the free internet even though I wasn't a local.

More recently I'll rent DVDs from the library, burn myself a copy and return the original the following day.

Books-wise most libraries seem to be horribly out of date with their hard copy books. With my move to reading 90% via Kindle, the library is losing even more of it's appeal. Finally, the lack of cute girls there and the over-abundance of weirdos makes the library a very unappealing place for anything more than a quick DVD grab, in and out.

The conversation moved to girls rightfully or wrongly so I chimed in about the library environment and the people there. Next time I go I'll bring a ladle and barrel of soup.

Instead it was the most depressing den of the dregs of society I've ever seen.

Full of old people mumbling to themselves, shuffling around, sitting like fat lards on the computers mouth-breathing loudly, guys that looked like Santa Clause, old ladies, ugly, socially-uncalibrated unemployed men droning on and on to librarians who clearly didn't want to talk to them. I sat and read my book for about 20 minutes before the stifling silences punctuated by a single mom's 3-year old son scraping a toy truck against a table forced me out of there. It was like the Mos Eisely of depressing libraries. And I live in very rich suburb of New York.

I've had much better luck with target selection at Barnes and Noble. Something about a free space to loiter in attracts the worst elements of a community.

This is the most hilarious fucking thing I've read on the Forum in a while. I am still laughing....well done, Checkmate.

The key is using the inter-library loan system. Of course, that may also depend on the quality of that system as well. Where I live, I can obtain almost any printed book that I want, including some really obscure stuff.

There is a new issue cropping up with regard to books that are only available electronically, but those books are very few. They are available only at the home library.

I did not have time to post about this fact earlier. Many people assume that they own Kindle books. They do not. Customers never actually buy a digital copy. Instead, they buy only a limited license to read that book in digital form. Amazon can revoke this license at any time and for any reason. So, be aware that under the right circumstances Amazon can simply empty your Kindle book collection.

http://www.law.yale.edu/news/10288.htm

Quote:Amazon deleted Norwegian IT Consultant Linn Nygaard’s Amazon account and removed access to the Kindle books she had purchased.

Martin Bekkelund blogged how Amazon closed her account and wiped her Kindle. It offered no explanation as to why it had done so.

Although it smacks of poor customer service, Amazon is completely within its rights to do this. Its terms of service state:

"All content included in or made available through any Amazon Service, such as text, graphics, logos, button icons, images, audio clips, digital downloads, and data compilations is the property of Amazon or its content suppliers and protected by United States and international copyright laws."

All the books on your Kindle are not yours. They belong to Amazon. All that cash you have paid was simply to access these books on your Kindle. You have not paid to own the books. If you want to own books, pay for physical printed books and get Amazon to send them to you by post.

http://www.zdnet.com/why-amazon-is-withi...000006385/

Quote:Is it true that I don’t really own the books I purchase for my Kindle?

If convenient euphemisms could somehow be outlawed, the “Buy now with 1-Click” button on Kindle pages would have to be relabeled “License now with 1-Click.” Amazon’s terms of service clearly state that, unlike those bulky slabs of arboreal matter that imparted knowledge to generations past, Kindle books can never be owned in the traditional sense. Instead, your $12.99 merely earns you the right to view the work on your Kindle. This arrangement gives Amazon the authority to snatch back that content if the company thinks you’ve been naughty—say, by copying and distributing ebooks or by engaging in fraud with your account.

Look at it from Amazon’s perspective: Part of the rationale for letting you resell old-school books is that you can do so only once—after the transaction is complete, the physical book is, by definition, no longer in your possession. That’s not necessarily the case with ebooks, which can be duplicated with ease. If Amazon grants its customers true ownership of Kindle books, it will have no quick recourse against scoundrels who resell books multiple times without deleting the original. Wiping someone’s Kindle stash is a lot easier than filing a lawsuit.

http://www.wired.com/underwire/2013/05/m...ll-kindle/

Although I have not tried this, you can eliminate the DRM on each Kindle book so that Amazon cannot snatch it away from you. This is just one example.

Quote:After you de-DRM your Kindle books, you will be able to read them on your Kindle as per usual, but you will also be able to convert them to PDFs, ePubs (for reading on a Nook, for example), and any other format. Most importantly, Amazon would never be able to take those books away from you – you get to keep what you bought.

There are plenty of good and plenty of shitty libraries. The main library in my city kicks ass, is kept pretty clean, and contains six floors of solid materials. I definitely spot at least a couple of cute girls every time I visit. Not target rich by any means, but if you're already using the library anyway it's a great perk. Try the weekends and Mondays if you're more concerned with getting some approaches in.

Library employees are civil servants and so it's literally illegal to turn away patrons unless they are violating some rules. Being disheveled or smelling doesn't usually count.

The library system in general (at least in my experience) is really big on following the rules -- Probably because your typical civil servant is an overweight 40-60 year old cat lady who wants to do as little as possible to get paid. When I worked at one I was told on numerous occasions that I should stop offering to help patrons in various ways because I wasn't supposed to offer services that weren't in my job description. The library branch I worked at also housed various other government employees, so we were a bit more strict on the rules than a normal branch might be. We had 2 police officers on staff every day due to the quantity of homeless and mentally disturbed people that would come in.

The best looking girls I ever saw there were a few of the girls who got arrested for DUIs and had opted to do community service. But there were some cute girls between those, single moms coming in for story time, and college students.

RE: The Public Library Appreciation Thread
"Ever wondered what diseases library books carry? You shouldn’t, because your local libraries need your help. Still, that didn’t stop two Belgian professors from running tests on the 10 most borrowed books in the Antwerp library and finding out what horrors lie between their spines.

The professors ran each book under a gamut of bacteriology and toxicology tests and found that in addition to all of them testing positive for cocaine (because what doesn’t test positive for cocaine?), copies of the ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ tested positive for herpes.

On the plus side — before you go screaming to the nearest doctor to get tested — books cannot pass on sexually transmitted diseases. Which is something we never thought we’d have to type.

The profs said that the traces of herpes were so tiny that they did not pose a health risk and that it would be impossible to get herpes merely by reading a book with herpes.

Still, makes you wonder how those copies got herpes in the first place. Wait, nope, nevermind. Don’t want to know."

This post was really informative. I didn't know exactly how my Kindle worked and that I didn't really own the "books" on there.

That's especially disheartening and now is making me feel even more like I want to switch back to reading and owning hard-copy books. +1 good info Tailgunner.

As for the other posts on libraries it only is solidifying my desire to never return and to move my public reading/relaxing/laptop work time to Starbucks or Barnes and Noble. $2.50 buys me infinite time in the cafe, a hot black tea or delicious cannoli and 10x the approach opportunities.

RE: The Public Library Appreciation Thread
The local university library allows state residents to borrow books as well. The selection is huge. Any available books are usually available among the floors of the building, as opposed to the public library system where books are in locations scattered across the city.

Apart from the newest books, this library has a better selection than a bookstore, and no perverted bums (besides me Big Grin) like the public libraries do. Did I mention that it's located on a major university campus?

Tail gunner make a thread on that! I was thinking about buying a kindle and getting books from torrents. What happens when your kindle dies? Another reason im not big on digital copies of anything .

Yeah, libraries are cool. Love free movies and books. I ccould care less about bums. Great idea on reading newer books at Barnes and Noble.

I go to public library often. I seldom use their books as they are mostly political-correct mumbo-jumbo.
I use the free internet and the space to sit in tranquility and take care of my business.
There are always lots of beautiful girls sitting around, sometimes I get a wink and a smile here and there :-)

RE: The Public Library Appreciation Thread
Don't sleep on Librarians. A lot of hot nerdy girls work there in the summer months during school. They are pretty easy to chat up and swoop. In my hometown I puled one out for drink one time.

Library though has been big for me. Growing up I could leave the house always to go to the Library. I would go most of the time while skipping out usually to go meet friends and then return back if my uncle or old man was gonna scoop me up on their way home from work.

I'm not the biggest reader but I like to just take in information so I would just browse a lot of books on random shit that was of interest to me. DVDs and Videos were always good to borrow too. Plus its the only place downtown in any city you can cop a nap and not have to feel sketch.

Good place to meet people to sell weed too.

RE: The Public Library Appreciation Thread
I recently started using the library system and man is it awesome. It's like compulsive shopping except everything is free and the product is actually enriching. I've read a ton lately.

The key to doing the library right is to always have lots of books on loan and on hold, so you always have plenty of reading material.

Most city libraries are terrible for both reading and macking, and everyone is pecking away at computers. At the LA library near me, the LIBRARIANS were talking loudly. Public libraries for the most part are indifferent at best to reading, hostile at worst. And despite all the babes on the street near my library, none of them ever make it inside.

Find a good cafe near your house or work and read there instead, if you want to mack. Or better, a university library.

Since this thread has been posted in again for the first time in over a year, I just wanted to point out something that I learned within the last few months... That is, you can often borrow books from libraries other than your municipal libraries. In Ohio, I believe it's called OhioLINK, I can search nearly every public library's catalog in the state and request books from them free of charge. Helps quite a bit, being able to borrow books for free that my local system doesn't have.

I believe local libraries here in the UK have something similar where you can request a book they don't have and they'll ask the British Library for it.

RE: The Public Library Appreciation Thread
As a kid my home life was lacking so I'd retreat to the public library, mostly reading books about boxing. I remember checking out and reading the book Raging Bull before I ever knew it was a movie. There are parts of Jake LaMotta's story that caused a lot of novel thoughts/emotions in the 11 year old version of me; quite a hair-raising book. If I recall correctly, he talked about possibly beating a guy to death in an alley and also (depending on how you read it) raping a girl. Probably I'll read it again at some point.

I'm actually currently sitting in a library. Maybe I'll go see if that have the book.
