RE: Where oh where in China
Don't wanna hijack this thread, but since you're all talking about China and Chinese women anyway...

I'm currently back in China for New Years. Got some minor set backs going on woman-wise. Main girl that I was fucking before and kept in contact with doesn't really want to meet me. She stopped responding to my texts earlier today. However, I had some problems at the airport, and she helped me out and called the airport staff for me at least. I told her to meet me at the airport before I left, but she didn't want to. At this point it's obvious she's fucking another guy and has moved on. It's all good.

Then some of my other hotter and more promising girls are now flaking on me. One hot girl that I made out with the last time I was here and was about to fuck, didn't respond to my text when I told her I was back in China. And a few other girls are flaking on me.

But I at least have 2 dates set up this week, one fairly hot.

That doesn't explain all this flaking, though. Did more laowai recently flood this place and fuck up the dating game? I'd assume it's because of the holidays, but they don't celebrate Christmas here (but they pretend to). I might actually have to resort to nightclubs now.

Any of you experience this?

So shit faced the one guy was crying and totally incoherent, the other 3 looked so hostile, I didn't bother to talk to them, they were anything but good with the ladies. They kept buying rounds for their table, they seemed to be regulars cause they pretty much stayed quiet the entire night in their corner.. those are the teachers I regularly run into... OR the other type of douche, who stop talking to me when I mention ANYTHING anti-western/feminist as in 3 or 4 twenty somethings at another place who seemed to know everything and were all married to AMERICAN broads but were all in China with them. Those are the people I really shake my head at.... I mean talk about a life of endless torture, surrounded by hot, petite, Chinese but chained to some fat western blob. These are the teachers here you just look at and think, WHY?

I know quite a bit on Macao, it moves more money than Vegas in their casinos actually. It's a small place, the pay is not super good but the place is safe and a pretty attractive place to live in too. As for jobs it can get a little tricky but me being portuguese.. I get a bit of an advantage Tongue

Could it just be that the type of chicks you've been in touch with are the flaky types? Esp if they are younger, I think the flakiness ratio is going to be high.

Goddamnit I'm jealous. Everything about Macau is awesome. If I could move there tomorrow I would. I can start a data sheet about it tomorrow if people can pitch in to fill in some of the details.

As far as I know, you are in the wrong place to be 'gaming' women... I think most of the Chinese girls are going on dates or giving out bangs with a hope of some ROI. If they don't call you back, they likely found someone to marry them. There are 30 million extra men in China, so you gotta get one before they're gone, women are getting money thrown at them that no PUA can compete with. Some are being offered millions of RMB to get married and start families. You'd probably have more luck with the married women who haven't had sex in a decade hanging out at the local laowai pubs.

I think I am going to move to Saigon on a tourist visa in a few months after I get some shit taken care of here. I have interviews with two well-paying jobs in Beijing and Shanghai tomorrow, but if they turn out to be a scam I'm done with China. If it was possible to switch a tourist visa to a work visa within the country it might be a different story. Average pay in Vietnam is 20 USD per hour. Thanks for all the input guys. I think I just need to stop planning and worrying so much and take a calculated risk for once in my life.

I dont really see that many drunk Chinese causing problems, usually they are just puking somewhere or being carried around by their friends. Drunk laowais on the otherhand are a huge pain in the ass.

That's part time work, looks a bit lower for full time. Tired of sitting around not getting anywhere, though.

Yes, that would be part time work, in all likelihood. Full time jobs in Vietnam and south-east Asia in general pay less generally than their Chinese counterparts. Chinese part-time rates go from $20 (absolute bottom of the barrel) to $25 as the typical hourly pay, all the way up to $35 or $40 if you provide real value and have a history of very satisfied clients.

I recently started a China job search as part of my move back to Asia and have in one week connect with an agency in Beijing that will be providing me with a full-time daytime gig in Beijing working at a kindergarten for 10,000RMB each month. Now, this isn't a lot of money for 40 hrs per week, but most of it is easy, since a good chunk of the time will be spent essentially babysitting some 2-6 yr olds and most importantly, it'll leave my evenings and weekend open for the real work...part time private clients.

I've done this before. 15 hrs a week or 10 one and a half hour lessons will another 10,000RMB per month minimum. With the decent day time pay for the kindergarten job, I don't have to be desperate and demand a high rate of pay, 200RMB per hour or $32.84USD. Ten hours of this work or 7 1.5 hr tutoring lessons each week and I've doubled my salary and only work 47 hrs each week.

In my experience, this is the way to make money in China. By the end of the year long contract with the kindergarten, I should have plenty of connections that will allow me to transition to earning 20,000RMB per month or more for 20 hrs of work each week.

I've meet a few friends of friends that teach English in Saigon ( a few were ABV), pay can range any where from $15-30 usd per hour as a private tutor, but obviously all dependent on the gigs you get. She was working only about 12 hours a week for this Korean family about 15-20 min motorcycle ride outside of District 1. She made enough to live decently over there, and probably easily could make more money if she actually hustled except she prefers to just hang out with other ex-pats and live up the cheap lifestyle Vietnam can afford you. Her total overhead was about $500 a month for food/shelter/gas.

RE: Where oh where in China
guys, I read the entire thread. What are your thoughts on a non-native speaker with a Russian passport but a finance bachelor and a law degree from the US? My English is perfect. Because I am not a native speaker, would I be stuck with part-time jobs wasting time or would I have to hustle a lot doing private tutoring? What are some websites to find private tutoring students in the mainland?

would it be difficult to sell myself to get a decent wage tutoring English over in China? I am currently in Taiwan but it's too boring for me and I seem to click better with the Chinese. I haven't really had any offers from the bulge bracket law firms yet even though a spent a little bit of time trying. I thought maybe I could make at least US$2000-3000/month while I chill in PRC and apply for law firm or other business jobs. Is it doable? Thanks

RE: Where oh where in China
2000 is definitely doable here in Shenzhen, and your number could be much higher (or lower) depending on where you want to be and how much you want to work. 10,000 for part time -55 hrs or so per month (180rmb/hr for native speakers, I am not including prep time though I imagine its not too heavy), is very available, and with your degrees you can walk in the door and have a job (I visited a friend at work this week and the administrators at the school he teaches at tried to recruit me as a part time teacher on the spot - btw, that school is called Web, and is one the bigger ones in SZ, along with Meten and Wall Street - I declined as I work remotely as an attorney). With a Russian passport, you don't even need a visa to come into China, I believe. Keep in mind that its technically illegal to teach english w/0 a biz visa, but I am not sure how involved that is for a russian to obtain in China. Likely much easier than an American lawyer (with a white shoe firm background) like me.

You'll want to tell them that despite your Russian passport, you grew up in the USA. They pay "Native" speakers more than they'll pay emigrants to the USA>

If you take one of these jobs, then you can easily augment with some private tutoring to take you up to 12000 (rmb or much higher), which is 2K per month. I'm told Beijing salaries are comparable though you can confirm for yourself. I think the cap on salaries is likely similar in other cities, but your cost of living could be lower (some places significantly so) elsewhere, again depending on how you want to live. You can check out my Shenzhen data sheet if you want more details on cost of living here.

I've referral links for most credit cards, PM me for them & thanks if you use them

Thanks for the response. I have a bit of white shoe firm experience from Vietnam as well, don't know if it would count for anything in PRC. I would not mind working in Vietnam either if it paid well, I would just like to experience life in China for at least a month or two and compare Chinese chicks to Vietnamese women to see where it's better.

It would be very helpful if someone could give me pointers on some websites to find private tutoring customers.

I already have a Chinese visa btw. I would probably want to stick with the huge cities unless the rent different between 1st and 2nd tier cities is over $200/month. I want to do the numbers game sarging while there.

RE: Where oh where in China
Please reread my numbers, they were off before.

Your firm experience in Vietnam might not count for much, US firm experience would count, but that would count for US firms in Shanghai and Beijing. Personally, I like Beijing in small doses quite a bit, but wouldn't want to live in that cold or that smog. Shanghai's air is no walk at the beach either.

Hustling English students for tutoring is pretty competitive in SZ actually. Rates will vary greatly. The schools also will assign my friends tutoring students, but I understand that the school takes half the fee for arranging the session, so that you might clear just a bit more than your hourly tutoring fee. Finding your own students is far more profitable but again, many teachers pursue it for exactly this reason. I've never heard about any websites for this, but if they exist, they'd likely be in Chinese, not in English.

RE: Where oh where in China
I'm in Beijing and for a native speaker, the English teaching market is like eating at a buffet. There are so many jobs and there are constant requests for your services.

While people will try to get a native speaker for 150 RMB per hour, there are plenty of jobs that will pay 200-250 RMB per hour, if you know your value and can negotiate.

For a non-native speaker jobs pay less. If you can sell yourself as a native speaker, then you can make the same money.

However, for the better jobs, where the bosses aren't morons or there are other foreigners that they can consult, if you have any Russian accent at all, they'll know that you aren't a native speaker. So, unless you are working for unreliable morons, as you often will, better to play it safe and go with a "Russian who lived in the USA for ten years" story.

It is a lot cheaper to live in a 2nd or 3rd tier city. The difference between rent will easily be $200US/month. However, anything other than the big three and one or two other cities with a good number of foreigners (Shenzhen/Tianjin), most places will feel pretty remote. You'll have a hard time making friends and while there will be a lot of demand for your services, jobs won't usually pay as much.

I'd recommend Beijing if you are just getting started as demand is massive and pay is good and there are a lot of great people to meet here, but Shanghai is also a very good option and Shenzhen or Guangzhou wouldn't be bad either. I don't recommend Tianjin.

If you have an open visa, why not take a trip to all the cities that you would consider working in and take a look. Train travel is incredibly cheap and hotels will cost only about $20US per night generally, so unless you are completely broke, there is no reason not to do this. See the sights, line up some job interviews and just see where you end up. If you want to come to Beijing, let me know.

I'm going to drop a data sheet soon that details exactly how the big money can be made here teaching English, but as a short preview, it requires working your ass off.

I'm the King of Beijing!

1)While demand is reasonably high for English teachers, as there is in all Chinese cities, there are enough foreigners (a lot of students, for example) that the hourly pay isn't that great and the opportunities available do not impress.

Full time jobs have sucky pay (lower than Beijing/Shanghai) but living expenses are comparable.

It's easy to fill the high demand hours with some part time work, but very challenging to put together a schedule with enough part time to actual pay the bills. I would know. I tried for two years.

Hard to get jobs that pay more than what they were paying a decade ago (150 RMB), which is a ridiculous low rate, consider how much more expensive China has become in the last decade.

2) The people are extra corrupt and dishonest, more so than most Chinese cities. Chinese people everywhere dislike Tianjiners. Expect to get ripped off constantly in Tianjin.

3) While 15 years ago, Tianjin had a beautiful part of town with Europe buildings from it's days as a trade concession, they have managed this area poorly and the city is just downright ugly and dirty for the most part.

4) While it isn't terrible, the entertainment opportunities for foreigners are much more limited than Beijing and Shanghai. When I lived there, there were only two clubs that were foreigner friendly and I'm not confident that they are both open any more. Only one had a reasonably sized dance floor. The other was way too crowded.

While in Beijing and Shanghai there are tons of restaurants that specialize in very tasty Western food (and other international cuisines), Tianjin doesn't have enough foreigners to justify good quality international food and the local Chinese are stupid morons who have no taste. Therefore, most restaurants specializing in Western food either taste worse than the food you probably cook at home yourself or are exorbitantly expensive.

It's really hard just to find a good burger. So hard, in fact, that on restaurant actually has my recipe on the menu, because I complained to the owner about the previous burger that they were selling and taught him how to cook one properly.

Oddly enough, that same restaurant makes a great steak.

In Beijing, it really isn't hard to find a good burger, because there is enough demand for good food that the sucky places go out of business.

In Tianjin, the locals are the main source of business and they are so poorly educated that they can't tell the difference between good and bad Western food.

Chinese food, however, is very impressive. If you are there, I recommend any restaurant specializing in DongBei cuisine.

5) Ugly girls with armpit hair.

6) There are three respectable subway lines, but two of them only opened in 2012. Before that, there was just one line for decades. It takes a long time to make infrastructure developments happen, because the local government is much more corrupt than average for China. They syphon off a lot of money for secret personal retirement accounts.

As a result, traffic is pretty pathetic. With an e-bike, this can be mitigated, but compared to the subway system in Beijing, Tianjin is just downright embarrassing.

Long story short, any thing you might like about Tianjin is going to be even better in Beijing. The only advantage of Tianjin is that it is smaller and most places can be reached in about 30 minutes, if you aren't driving a car in rush hour traffic, taking a taxi or a bus. In Beijing, by comparison, it can take one or two hours to get to a lot of places.

It helps to have a completed four year bachelors degree. Otherwise, there are no guarantees. Things have gotten a lot stricter.

RE: Where oh where in China
(06-23-2014 06:32 AM)chamele0n Wrote:  guys, I read the entire thread.

Thanks

I have a close buddy that does translation and other legal paperwork for Chinese law firms. If your Mandarin (writing-wise) is tight, let me know and I can see if he can help you find a firm to work for in the mainland. They love him so much, he can work in China or back in the USA, anytime he wants, so he likes to mix up his stretches in each place.
