This video is three years old. But what the heck. It is amazing.

It is fascinating how a ship can go from being a calm safe environment to a life and death fight for survival. In less than ten seconds.

The CCTV footage is amazing as it shows the effects on the dining area of the ship when it is suddenly hit by giant waves.

Luckily nobody was killed. But quite a few injuries.

Cruises are fun, but this video is a reminder that it is all fun and games until the ship starts to list. I do know two people that died on that Italian cruise ship disaster.

But, I admit it: I laughed at this too. Many heavy folks rolling and sliding. Ouch!

I think cruise ships are the most exciting thing boring people do.

"Oh look, Im in a hotel that floats. They have a buffet and a casino and theres a show with a magician in a purple suit".

Never been in one though. Perhaps they are even more boring than I imagine.

I love the concept of cruises, but this is a joke.

I was watching on Discovery a documentary on people's survival instinct. They guestimated that only 11-17% of people in a population will remain calm enough to survive a disaster. The others panic or freeze up and not do anything.

How the hell can you panic or freeze up? Sit back and watch. Use the adrenaline to slow down time. Hell disaster situations are as nerve racking as approaching a girl during day game. Slow the f*ck down.

I'd say most guys on this forum would be with Gmanifesto, suited up, life jacket on, sipping scotch at the bar.

Speak for yourself mate, I'm fucking terrified of being on a boat in the sea. It's a big fear of mine. Now that I'm an adult I can't ever see myself going on a boat (unless on a river, which is fine) again!

I don't like turbulence, but I'd much rather be on a flight with a bit of turbulence than even go on a boat that rocks at all. I don't like it when it leans and you sort of feel like you'll be tipped into the water, even though in actuality the boat is only leaning a very small amount. In fact, being stranded, floating in the middle of an ocean, on your own, in pitch black night is my absolute worst nightmare. If you really imagine it, it is hellish. I don't mean on a boat, I mean just you floating.

I think it is probably related to not being too good at swimming as a kid. I'm perfectly competent now, but I didn't like getting water in my face.

I remember when the Estonia sank a lot of the survivors described climbing over a sea of passive people who could have climbed out but just held onto something and wailed for help. Not surprisingly, in a quick, chaotic sinking with no organized evacuation the overwhelming majority of survivors were young men.

And to tease the sea phobic people, I'm not afraid of a lot of things and I've worked everywhere from boats to rooftops, but here's one job I would not do: diving inside a shipwreck with nearly a thousand dead inside it.

It's enlightening to compare the Estonia to the Titanic

On the Estonia, of 989, 138 survived-and "The survivors of the shipwreck were mostly young, of strong physical composition, and male. Seven people over 55 years of age survived. There were no survivors under age 12."

Wikipedia describes what happened on on the Titanic:

wBy about 00:20, 40 minutes after the collision, the loading of the lifeboats was under way, though it was perhaps symptomatic of Captain Smith's apparent indecisiveness that it was at the suggestion of Second Officer Lightoller. As the latter recalled afterwards, "I yelled at the top of my voice, 'Hadn't we better get the women and children into the boats, sir?' He heard me and nodded reply."[91] Smith ordered Lightoller to put the "women and children in and lower away".[92] Lightoller took charge of the boats on the port side while Murdoch took those on the starboard side. The two officers interpreted the evacuation order differently; Murdoch took it to mean women and children first while Lightoller took it to mean women and children only. Lightoller lowered lifeboats with empty seats if there were no women and children waiting to board, while Murdoch allowed a limited number of men to board if all the nearby women and children had embarked.[78] Neither officer knew how many people could safely be carried in the boats as they were lowered and erred on the side of caution by not filling them. They could have been lowered quite safely with their full complement of 68 people.[78] Had this been done, an extra 500 people could have been saved; instead, hundreds of people, predominantly men, were left on board as lifeboats ere launched with many seats vacant.[76][90]

In another incident:

At 01:45, lifeboat No. 2 was lowered.[128] While it was still at deck level, Lightoller had found the boat occupied by a number of men who, he wrote later, "weren't British, nor of the English-speaking race ... [but of] the broad category known to sailors as 'dagoes'."[129] After he evicted them by threatening them with his revolver, he was unable to find enough women and children to fill the boat[129] and lowered it with only 25 people on board out of a possible capacity of 40.[128] John Jacob Astor saw his wife off to safety in No. 4 boat at 01:55 but was refused entry by Lightoller, even though 20 of the 60 seats aboard were unoccupied.[128]

The result of this : 97% of women in first class, 86% of second class,46% of third class and 87% of the crew survived; 83% of children in first class, 100% in second class and 34% in third class survived. The men? 33% of first class, 8% of second class, 16% of third class and 22% of the crew survived.

82 years separated the two incidents; the behavior of the men illustrates the radical social change in the relationships between the sexes in that time that has occurred in the West. On the Estonia, instead of assisting the women and children and giving them their places on the lifeboats, it appears the men largely acted to save themselves.

And I say, good for them. This is the culture feminism has created and they deserve to live or die with its consequences.
