This is the option or use of data that I was the most concerned about with the whole NSA thing. Its not the tracking of actual criminal dealings but its the gathering of material for blackmail "just in case".

We see examples on this forum of 'say something a feminist doesn't like and they will report your twitter feed to your employer and get you fired'

The government is now re employing 'say something we don't like and we will leak to the press and your family your donkey porn viewing habits when you were 16"

I say re-employ as they cite hoover's sex file back in the day as a good example.

Anyway, my concern is that few people have used the internet for terrorist means, a few more use it for criminal means but almost everyone has used it to do something embarrassing and the gov't can now threaten anyone they choose with a Weinergate.

Im more worried that some feminazi/white knight trying to find me out over the g-men. Anyone know any secured phone/tablets? I'm looking at BlackBerry's Q10 and playbook.

Just assume the worst - i.e; assume that everyone is going to know that you're some hated blogosphere character (who's not written anything yet) and plan accordingly. Technology won't protect you.

Honestly Hades I'd love to out myself, unfortunately I work at a very liberal women centered job that happens to have very good pay for my career choice (maintenance engineer). With people now just going straight to employers with these finds its mere childish snitching. I'd love to keep my job so I can stay "behind enemy lines" in lack of a better term.

We're getting to the point where this will start to backfire because no one will trust the government/NSA anyway.

Since they're so deeply embedded in the tech companies and the telecoms, they could basically fake whatever they wanted. They could probably put any kind of fucked up porn they wanted on a person's computer, or manufacture a bunch of fake text messages. At some point people will simply stop believing it. It will be like, "Oh yeah, another dissident apparently likes donkey porn, amazing how that all suddenly comes out when they start criticizing the government."
