I saw it Live at the Longacre theatre last year was a great show. He is doing spot dates all over the world you should look out to see when you can catch it.

I saw it live in San Francisco last year and even met Mike for a few seconds after. He gave me a hug. Probably because I was with a cute girl and wearing a red blazer.

The New York show was a little different. Same stories but he added a lot more local flair in the NY show.

In SF, he was a little nervous, the crowd was mostly white. He was a little shy at first..

When there was a litte pause in the action, I yelled -- "We love you Mike"

He said -- "I love you too".

I like to think that this calmed him down and made him more comfortable up there.

The NY show was a little better, probably because he was home.

Amazing story of a modern American gladiator.

^ Mike Tyson in his late teens/early twenties would have obliterated any Heavyweight in history. I had a different opinion until I recently watched a LOT of Tyson vids. A 20 year old Mike Tyson would beat any boxer in the history of the sport. Maybe perhaps 18 year old, when Cus was still alive.

I got a chance to see the special. It's crazy that a guy can just give a monologue of his life story and it being so interesting that it does well on Broadway and is produced by a famous director.

As for Tyson the boxer, he fought whoever he could in his era. Not all eras are created equal. People say the same thing to discredit guys like Mayweather, (Andre) Ward, and even De la Hoya. But all you can do is fight who's out there and that's it.

Tyson in his prime is my favorite all-time boxer for stylistic reasons but I don't think he could have beat Ali. Even Tyson agrees!

I finally watched it last night. Of course, being both a boxing fan AND a New Yorker, I remember so much of what he talked about on stage. I love that it was completely in Mike's voice - salty language and all. The show is true to who he is.

As for the comments about who Mike fought on the way up...his path was no different than any other young fighter with promise. Mike was a teenager, so who should they have put him in there with on the way up? He fought veteran journeymen. Cus had him on a one fight a month program, to keep him busy and to take the lessons from the gym into the ring against competition. I believe on some occasions he had him fight twice in a month, because he was knocking guys out so quickly.

Mike's career was definitely split in two halves - the D'Amato/Jacobs/Cayton team era, and the King era. D'Amato's team truly cared about Mike, and also knew how to handle him to a certain extent. If you saw "Undisputed Truth," you know what a troubled kid he was. D'Amato had him focused, well-trained and prepared to fight. After D'Amato and Jacobs died, and King/Givens/Roper moved in the get Cayton pushed out, they ruined him. Mike wasn't hyped and marketed. He was legitimately intimidating, and decent fighters, once they tasted the power, were just looking to survive. The way he came into the ring, black trunks and shoes, no socks or robe, and just a towel with a hole cut in it over his shoulders. Grimacing and glistening with sweat, ready to get in that ass. No feeling out process - he RAN out into the center of the ring at the bell and went to work. That's not hype - that's legit. Buster Douglas was actually a highly-skilled, but underachieving fighter. That night in Japan was the perfect storm - Douglas' mother had just died. That can affect a fighter in one of two ways. He can either be overcome with grief and not want to fight, or it can motivate him to fight harder and without fear. For Buster, a notoriously unmotivated fighter, it was the latter. Mike, however, came in lazy and unprepared. They were so sure they'd win, that they didn't even send experienced cornermen with him. There was no cutman, and they didn't even have an endswell in the corner. By this time, Mike had already abandoned much of what Cus had taught him - there was no more bobbing and weaving, no more head movement. He was no longer going to the body, breaking guys down. He was a straight up-and-down headhunter, but because he could take a shot and still hit harder than everyone out there, he was still able to get guys out. Remember, he almost had Douglas out that night with a nasty uppercut. In the show, Mike talks of the 13 second count Buster got. That isn't completely true though. By rule, the ref doesn't have to start the count, or can stop or delay the count until the fighter goes to the neutral corner, and Mike was slow to get to the corner. While Buster was rocked, he wasn't as hurt as many think he was. He did what a fighter should - take your time and clear your head before you get up. The fact that he went right back to work on Mike validates that.

After this fight, and that bullshit rape conviction, along with the bloodsucking King, Mike was a shell. I actually don't blame him for biting Holyfield. Evander had become a dirty fighter later in his career - almost none of his opponents made it out of the ring without getting their faces split open or badly swollen due to his frequent head-butting. But Mike was done - he didn't want to fight anymore, but couldn't do anything else and he needed money. The end of his career doesn't mean his early career was a sham.

Ali vs Tyson is one of my favorite debates. Its always tough to compare athletes from different eras. My current position is something that I heard from an old boxing trainer.. Maybe, it was Angelo Dundee, I forget..?

His opinion was:

Ali would have beaten Tyson because Ali had better "character". Ali had slighter better internal motivation, focus, and mental toughness. When things got tough, Mike was more likely to quit.

Muhammad also had a huge reach advantage. And, he knew how to use it against smaller, hard punching opponents.

Ali fought a guy who was similar to Tyson, Joe Frazier. He beat him 2 out of 3 but it took everything Ali had to finish Frazier. Based on those 3 fights, I think you have to admit that Tyson-Ali would be a good, competitive fight.

Obviously, if Cus would have lived another 5-10 years, Mike probably would have reached a higher level.

But, who knows..

I also would love to see Floyd Mayweather vs Bruce Lee is a street fight. Another tough one?

I saw this movie last night at my parents' place in Florida (I flew out to visit them for the holiday). Even they watched it, and even they liked it. I thought it was a painfully honest, tragic monologue on the life and times of his meteoric career. Considering what this guy came from, it's not surprising that he did not possess the emotional tools needed to handle being a multimillionaire at age 20. I ended up having a lot of sympathy for Tyson, even though he did contribute significantly to his own problems.

Which one of us would not have self-destructed in similar circumstances?

Best tv I have watched in a while.

He could have easily gone on for two more hours.

His legacy was destiny. Think about how easily he could have been dead or in jail for life.

Shows you how your frame can outweigh your physical game the way that a young mike was literally scared of Cus an old white Italian man.

Redman told me a story once of how he knew Mike was in trouble when he and meth were on the black out tour in like the whitest part of America (Indiana or somewhere) and they get back stage after the show was done and get a knock on the door and its Tyson totally unannounced with two random white brauds. He came did some coke with the girls and left. He was explaining it to me like why was Iron Mike just chilling with two regular white girls in middle America.

I finished the book last Thursday, and I absolutely loved it, I won't spoil any of the book for you, but in his epilogue particularly, it's just brutal.

He talks a little but about his rape case at the start of the book.

He then says that because of UK libel laws (which are some of the strictest in the world) he can't go into some of the details.

So - for the nerds out there - it is possible the US edition is a little different at that point of the book.

Am about 60 pages in. Great stuff so far!

i really wanted to love this. i watched it hopefully. i enjoyed it but he lost me with the street fight segment. it just went on far too long and was too embellished. too much enjoyment taken from that story by him and the crowd.

there was also a little too much recalled bravado from the past i thought, at the beginning, and not enough time of humble mike at the end to balance it out.

i grew up watching his fights and was a big fan. still am. just thought the special could have been better.

Yeah - I can understand that. Mike Tyson has so many interesting stories that you could make about six different shows which would be totally different. And equally compelling.

So - I can see why any fan may have wanted an emphasis placed on other sides of his life story.

Personally - I am a sucker for cool artistic flourishes. And the strobe/camera flashes at the start of the show (at the end of the opening song) sent chills down my spine. It looked really cool.
