Seems that gay establishments have spread out profusely from their original home base of Dupont Circle for a while now...

Today, having moved here 10 months ago after six and a half years of living in Manhattan, I hardly recognize that closeted, often intolerant Washington I first glimpsed as a 20-year-old. I now live in the gayest place in America.

But don’t take my word for it. Consider what surveys by Gallup and the Census Bureau have found about the gay population here. When the District of Columbia is compared with the 50 states, it has the highest percentage of adults who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, according to Gallup. At 10 percent, that is double the percentage in the state that ranks No. 2, Hawaii, and nearly triple the overall national average of 3.5 percent.

The Census Bureau looked at where the highest percentage of same-sex couple households were and also found that the District of Columbia ranked far higher than the 50 states, with 4 percent. The national average is just under 1 percent.

One of my first observations about my new city was the throngs of gay men I would see over the course of a typical day all over town — walking their dogs in my neighborhood before work, riding the Metro, working in the halls of Congress.

I’m not the first to have noticed this change.

“There’s an openly gay presence that makes you think you’re in the Castro or West Hollywood, and it wasn’t always the case,” Robert Raben, an assistant attorney general during the Clinton administration who was one of several openly gay people appointed by President Clinton, told me. “The federal government was a nightmare for homosexuals for decades, and then it wasn’t.”

Such ubiquity isn’t just an abundance of gay bars, though there are at least six within walking distance of my house in the Logan Circle neighborhood of Northwest Washington. On the days I make the 20-minute walk from home to my office near the White House, I will pass one example after another of this city’s thriving gay economy: a Mitchell Gold & Bob Williams furniture store; a clothing retailer whose window displays regularly feature bare-torso, well-endowed mannequins in nothing but tiny briefs; three CrossFit gyms; the offices of two gay newspapers, The Washington Blade and Metro Weekly (most cities cannot even sustain one); a bathhouse; and the national headquarters for the Human Rights Campaign.

The more out of closet gay people, the better the ratio for men like me. Encourage them out of the closet. The ratios suck as is in DC, so I can't imagine what it would be like if there were more men hitting on women.

When I was dating my last girlfriend, there was this IRT that was a hardcore orbiter. Classic blue-pill scenario. This just a quirk in the statistics. DC has a higher gay % than other States- but then DC, unlike the 50 states, is 100% a city. Gays are way more likely to live in the city, so it stands to reason that a "state" that is a 100% city would have the highest gay %.

The relevant comparison you could make would be DC and other cities- does DC really have a much higher gay % than SF or NYC?

Was in DC for the past few days. I hated the women. Many of them simply were not good looking back acted like they were 10's.

I lived in a city where the ratio was 1 okay looking girl to 5 dudes. There was a huge amount of gay/bi guys in that city as well. Lack of pussy must turn guys to dick.

Yup.

My best friend in high school was gay. But when I met him, he had dated girls and actually had a girlfriend for over a year. I think most gay men are like this and have had previous experiences with women. When he came out of the closet I didn't give a shit or even talk about it that much, but if I had asked him why, he'd probably say something along the lines of, "I just don't connect with women that well."

Chicks loved this guy. Talk, good looking, very social, loves to party. He always used to say, "If I was straight I'd get more pussy than a toilet seat" and it was true. But I think something was missing on the emotional side. He's an amazing artist, one of the most talented painters/illustrators I've ever seen. American women are ruthless to sensitive types.

He grew up with a mentally deranged single mother that eventually killed herself. We grew up in a town where women are pretty awful. Typical American suburbia.

What if he grew up in a more traditional environment surrounded by feminine women? Who knows...

I don't think DC had anything on San Fran or south beach, but I've never been, I could be wrong. An overwhelming amount of my former coworkers were gay in south beach. Kind of weird when you think of a place with some of the best tallent arguably in the world being filled with gays.

Baltimore is surprisingly heavily gay. The downtown area and the twenty or so blocks immediately north of the downtown area is the gayest place I have ever seen. It seemed to be much more than anywhere in the D.C. area.

thedude3737, the stories about both of those men are actually typical of closeted gays.

A certain type of closeted gay is always "in love" with some girl but somehow nothing ever comes out of it. You have to realize that some of these closeted gay guys are really tortured by their sexuality so they attempt to convince themselves more or less successfully that they have feelings for women and as long as these feelings stay platonic and unrequited they can maintain the self-delusion.

Then there is another type like your high school friend where the guy doesn't give a shit about women and is therefore able to have a lot of sexual success. These guys are mechanically able to fuck women especially when they're young and have high test, but they are incredibly sexually bored by them and eventually act on their true preferences.

I don't believe for a moment that men "become gay" because women around them act a certain way. Would you start sucking guys' cocks or taking it up the ass because women are acting bitchy? It's a laughable idea. With vanishingly rare exceptions, it's really true that men are either gay or not, and they are born that way. Hell, you can sometimes see that someone is going to be gay at like 3-4 years old. It's really that dyed in the wool.

What is true about current society is that there is much less of a penalty for "coming out" and indeed in parts of society there are outright rewards and celebrations of this. So it's unsurprising that more closeted gays are not staying closeted. But it's not because straight guys are "becoming gay". I blame feminism for a lot, but not for this.

Yea I have to agree. I think sexuality is not completely biologically determined there are other factors at work.

The best example is prision. From what I understand its kind of condoned for guys to fuck other men especially when they have long bids of 5 plus years. I think the expression used is "gay for the stay."

My town is filled with horrible, cuntish, fat women.

When people ask what my town is like, I tell them this is a pretty typical Friday night. The fucked part is that it's literally only a slight exaggeration. I'm not kidding about that.
