How did you acquire your job where you are at or other jobs?
Did you find it in the newspaper and called?

Did you find it online, and what website?

Also when you apply how do you go through the process? Do you submit your application and wait for a call or do you call and chat with someone?

I have no idea how to find a job these days. I'm older and found my first private sector jobs via professional association websites for my profession. Same for my government job.

looking for a new signature.

The only thing I can recommend is to call and insist on meeting. Do not email CV's. My employer read my CV when interviewing me. Huge economy of time and nerves.

Also, insist on talking directly with employer, not HR or some agencies. A job where the task of hiring is delegated to third parties is poised to have a toxic environment.

Obviously this all will gravitate you towards smaller private sector and not government or big coorporation jobs. And that is where you want to be if you want to see how business works to one day make your own. Also in private sector you will be under less regulations and much more depends on your communications skills and relationships with your employer and colleagues. You will have lower cortisol levels.

Depends what job you're looking for. I can't speak for a trades job, but if it's white collar, cubicle, 9-to-5 living you're looking for, LinkedIn is a go-to spot for new job postings, I've found. There were other websites I used in the past - Monster, Workopolis - but in my last job search they were pretty iffy. LinkedIn is probably a good start for you.

Companies typically have a job openings section on their sites too, so if there's a specific company you'd like to join or an industry you want to be in & you know the key players, check out their websites and see if there's anything open there. wiscanada's also right, professional associations and their websites are good spots for openings in the field too.

This also reminds me of another website I'd recommend, at least if you're in Canada (I don't know if there's an American counterpart): eluta.ca. It lets you search for jobs based on keywords and your location, and it'll actually looking at the different companies' websites to pull those jobs you're interested in. It's not perfect - there were instances where eluta would claim the job was newly posted recently while it was actually ancient - but it did a good job of letting you know what's out there without having to go to all those individual websites.

As far as applications go, it was all, submit an app and wait. Sometimes just a cover letter + resume, sometimes jumping through a bunch of hoops on their recruiting website that you'd have to register for. Though I have read that talking to the hiring manager/bypassing the recruiter improves your chance of getting hired, but I think that's only if you get to the right hiring manager... your best chance of success is if you know someone at the company and they refer you. Referrals to HR get your foot in the door where words on a paper are hit-or-miss.

In any case, good luck.
