I'm talking about a significant event in your life, good or bad, that a song was playing at the same moment and are now intertwined. The type of correlation to where years later you can pour a whiskey, sit back, listen to the song, and reminisce. Or out of the blue it comes on and you automatically go into that "place" and people have to bring you out of that sudden flashback.

I got a few songs!





This song reminded me of the old school rap in Philly. And what everything used to be back then.

Everyone had worn jerseys and shorts that went down very long to ankles. Everybody wanted to rap freestyle out of random moments. It was still a fucked up city as a kid, but damn it was better than it was now.

Everytime I play this song I also laugh. When you're a kid you don't really think about the lyrics of rap songs. But as you get older, that understanding gets better.

I love these music threads. I wish there was a way to play the songs without youtube, in a streaming format. RVF has some dope shit.

I was hungover with a group of good friends in a cabin in the Rockies. The sun was hanging low in the morning of the winter sky and we were cooking breakfast before heading out skiing for the day.

The phone at the cabin rings and its the news that three of our really close friends had just died in a crash over the border in Montana. This album was playing, and this song in particular hit pretty hard.

I took my first trip out of the country(to Europe) in 2001. Right around this time Zero 7's first album dropped and I listened to this song a lot while I was traveling about the continent. It came on while I was at the (then) Easy Everything cyber cafe in Amsterdam and since then I cant help but associate the song with that trip. Damn, 12 years already.

I used to smoke weed and listen to this song while fucking my friends sister. Just a super sexy petite rocker chick. Great fucking times. Every time it comes on it brings me back. Sucks shes practically a crackhead now.





Great song I used to snowboard too. Every time I hear it I just think of bombing down some backcountry on some fresh sick powder.

Same girl as above. Shes been a regular for over a decade with some breaks here and there as we both pursued different directions in life. This song reminds me of her because of all the flak we have got and sometimes continue to get from people about our relationship.

Back in the day I spent almost a week in HK, which in itself is a modern marvel. We walked around for days in sheer awe at the city. In the evenings we'd hit up a nice lounge to pregame and grab a bite to eat. After running hard all day, that transition was our only time to relax "stop" for a minute, before going hard again. 2 become 1 was playing all over the radio and video channel. The song was relaxing and the video, with its fast forward effects, summed up HK well. It looked liked the pace of the city.






The song brings back memories of a place I'd still move to today. HK is a must visit for everyone on here.

Gonna be a long one, I'll break it down into a couple posts, I have a LOT of songs like this.

This one takes me back to middle school every time. Great lyrics that a young alienated loner could relate to.



The piece that got me stuck on classical music sometime in the middle school years. I still rock out to it.




Sophomore year of high school. Hating life. I'm still blown away by Adam Jones' music videos. MTV was still good then.




Met some kids from the drama club at the rival school. They introduce me to weed, partying, and Smashing Pumpkins.




Meet my first girlfriend (and love) in that drama club social circle. In 6 months I went from being a complete loser to having friends, getting a gf, losing virginity, and going to prom, something I never thought I'd do. During the slow dance at prom, this song comes on and we have a heavy makeout session

High school I'm ditching class to smoke weed and play classical guitar. I pick up this monster piece and within a couple years I'm playing it literally with my eyes closed.




Post high school I'm disillusioned with working, girlfriend, and being a professional musician. Spend a couple years working bullshit cook jobs and taking acid. Get heavily into classic rock:




Eventually move to L.A., become a professional cook, and start a decade of dating a string of dysfunctional girls. Still, I developed feelings for most of the them and these songs all bring back lots of memories, songs that meant something to me while I was with various girls.

This song came on during an epic event in my life, but I can't remember which one. Never even looked it up to see who sings it, and took an hour tonight. I though it'd been released within the last couple years, but it came out in Sept. '07. Fuck. That is a lot of years and even more in events to try to match up.

All I recall is waking up to it in a lavish hotel*, a female**, and feeling warm***, safe, and very content****. So Asia, ME, NA, or Europe. I've played life on "insane" difficulty mode in all those places, so narrowing it down is a bitch. Every time it comes on though I go to that place, but can't recall which place it was. Been driving me crazy though. It sucks not being able to remember the best times of your life.

I was 14 years old and one of my best friends had just become homeless. His mother had just lost their house and him and his older brother had the option of being forced into foster care or they could fend for themselves until their mom could get things back together. She never did.

A friend of his mom had a little holiday trailer in his lot behind a KFC and he went to live there. I remember helping him move in (he had been staying with my family until that point) and we were sitting at the tiny little table talking about life. He told me straight up that this was the lowest point his life would ever get to.

He said it was comforting to know that no matter what, things were going to get better. They did. He is very successful and happy and lives an interesting life.

This song didn't mean shit to me cuz I was billy bad ass. Then I grew up. Ironic as Sept N.C. time, then off to Iraq. Now most of that crew is dead, and pure innocence lost. I can't even play this on the guitar no more. Bitch ass end. Ramadi was a hell hole.

Won a footy (soccer) state high school championship to this.

The team huddled in a tent before the final game, and we listened to this speech in a circle shoulder to shoulder. Our shout at the end of it puts many battle cries to shame. When we came out of the tent and saw the opponent team staring at us, we could see the fear and doubt in their eyes. We knew we were going to win that game at that moment.

It still sends shivers down my spine and gives me goosebumps.

sure, these all came out when was high school, and its basically all I heard for 4 years. I saw all of these bands multiple times, my avatar is Kurt Cobain from a halloween Nirvana show in Akron that I was at. I saw Pearl Jam on their first tour as a band, hung and smoked with them. Saw Soundgarden open for several bands before they made it big, saw them open for Danzig on the night of my 15th birthday in 1990. A lot of people think these bands are giant sell outs, but for me it was a huge transitional time where I was a fan of all these bands before they ever became popular, and then 'grunge' became cool and all the preppy kids loved it.

I can't listen to "Running with the Devil" by Van Halen. I got stabbed when I was in Medellin, 16 while going home and listening to this song. Just for a fucking 10 dollars and a shitty MP3 player that costed 20, not even a single question, knife to the abdomen.

I only have one song that I can associate with a life-changing event.

Fall of 2012, I just got dumped by my then-gf, who I had adored, and put myself through hell so she could "figure things out" by giving her space. She ended up leaving both me and the office we worked in. At the same time, I was preparing for a talk where I had to ask a committee if I could move on to writing my thesis. This was stressful in itself becauce a 'no' would have meant me staying back for at least another year, something which I was desperate not to do.

One Sunday afternoon, I was in my lab working on this huge talk, which was about an hour long, when while going to take a leak, I see her walking down the hall towards me carrying some of her shit out of her old office. I ducked out of the way, and let her do her thing. About two hours later, I went to out lunchroom to get a tea. On the central table, was a container of expensive hand cream that I had bought for her as a present when I was out of the country presenting at a conference earlier in the year. She had evidently found it while cleaning out her office, and put it on the table for someone else to take. It was an act that was unbelievably cruel to me, and almost broke me right then and there.

I got back to the lab, and tried to work. I ended up putting a talk together, but I wasn't happy with it, so I started again from scratch. During this time, my mind was still spinning from the lunchroom thing. I thought about how I had done everything right: been a good man, a nice person, stuck by the idea that if you do good things, then good things happen. I realised, right then and there, that even if you do all of that, there's no guarantee of something good coming from it. It was a life-changing revelation. I also thought about how I could ever deal with this, and how was I ever going to pass this test with this going on in my mind. It was at this moment, this only moment in my whole life, that I thought about whether I should just punch out permanently right there.

I got on the lab computer, and started looking for something to cheer me up. I remembered the song 'I Get Wet' by Andrew WK was in a fan-made trailer for 'The Expendables', and I put on the live version where Andrew plays the piano in the lead up. When I heard it, something upstairs flipped in my head. It was from despair, to joy. I listened to that song a few more times, and it made me happy for this first time since about June. I went back to work on my presentation, and went home at around 3am with it done and saved.

I went to my meeting the following Wednesday, and killed it. I was back on the course to being happy and positive. Of course I still had a lot of things in my head to get over, but that Sunday night was a marker; I no longer was afraid of running into people cleaning out there office; and I knew that I was almost done my studies. That was the moment where the 'red pill' was well and truly taken. I had seen the world for what it truly was.

Since then, I've had the time of my life, sleeping with lots of women that I never would have had the balls in a million years to talk to, let alone take home; standing up for myself when people did bad things; improving myself as much as possible; and owning up to mistakes I had made, and moving on from them. I have also realised that the actions of this person were my fault. I let her walk all over me; let her do things to me that I never would have tolerated from anyone else because she was my 'girlfriend'. I realised that my happiness is paramount; and that being nice and gentlemanly all the time to a women will eventually lead into them hating your guts. I'm at a point now where that behaviour by me will not happen again.

Anyways, f'k it. Here's the song that got the ball rolling.

A mashup of 2pac's "me against the world" with Biggie's "Everyday struggle" kept me alive and going through my darkest times after I was falsely accused of sexual assault in college and everything I loved was taken from me. I was depressed and suicidal and this shit kept me going.
