Do you respect $500?
So I gave this guy 500 bucks to help him out and in return he was supposed to do some work for me. He did some work - not very good wanted some changes. Didn't like my ideas - work at a stand still.

He is flat broke - so I asked him if he had any of the money left and he said it was gone in 2 days. He said 500 bucks is nothing. So broke that often his cell phone is down.

To me $500 bucks can still be put to good use. I am surprised, though I shouldn't be since he has bad judgement. But how does a flat ass broke mofo think 500 is nothing?

Does $500 mean a lot you? Not if you can afford to lose 500 and not cry about it. I have lost plenty of money in my life and not cried about it. But I still respect money.

Do you respect $500?

RE: Do you respect $500?
$500 is a good chunk of change, but not a lot in the US. It doesn't go very far. In that sense, it is nothing. However, it's still a sizeable amount.

The man's broke.

A penniless man who's dismissing $500 as chump change is simply confirming that he'll always be a loser.

Shit.

I respect $100. I respect $1.

I have dropped $500 on a dinner out many times, but still expect and demand value for the money spent.

Tuth, I don't wanna get banned, not trying to troll. LOL.

I could lose $500 and not cry about it, but I still respect what it can do.

Was just shocked that this dude who is f'n broke thought it was no big deal.

In my other threads I have mentioned how I grew up a bit sheltered and my friends and people I keep around me for the most are very successful. I have been around this guy for about a year and I sort of feel sorry for him. I like helping people - shoot me. But I amazed by how he sees the world and how badly he misjudges reality.

I pick up pennies - I don't care if they are heads up or down - my favorite penny find was during a bad patch - it was so fucked up - but I realized it doesn't matter how much of a beating it took - it was still worth a penny. I applied that thought to me and the situation I was in.

That's 4 days work at my current job. It isn't hard backbreaking work, but wasting 500 bucks is wasting 4 days of my life.

Sounds like homeboy's got a drug or gambling problem.

NO, it's MUCH more than four days, because you spend a lot of that daily $100 supporting yourself.... to work!

Let's say you live on $30 per day total (unlikely) so you have to work about 7 days (7 x 70) to save $500 to lose for some reason.

That's 1O DAYS of your life.

If you're 35, and will live to 70 35x about 300 ( a lot of the future days of your life will be almost all work, shitty days to be blunt, so saying you're "living" 300 days a year is optimistic) 10,500, that's about 1/10 of 1%, or 1/1000 of your whole remaining life. Or 1/300 of your best remaining days under 50.

That's why I ONLY work by the hour.

The OP should have broken up the job into smaller increments, it keeps everyone safer.

If he paid for the $75 chunk and the guy didn't do well, OP could have said " I don't think it will work out", let the guy keep the $75 and not a big deal.

RE: Do you respect $500?
IKE, I know - but he had done a similar project earlier that turned out acceptable. I wanted to help him out.

Lately, I have had this recurring thought - "Growth or life lessons do not always come cost free. Sometimes you gotta pay." Something like that.

I am always trying to get the benefit without the pain. Sometimes, I gotta take the pain - can't avoid it.

Scorpion - he is just someone who thinks he is destined to be a famous director and doesn't want to work a normal job.

Worse yet, everything is always someone else's fault. I have never heard him accept any blame for his set backs in life. You are right Scorpion - I gotta cut him loose. I was going to let him be involved in a business I have been developing, He hasn't done anything amazing to help move it along. But I don't think I could stand having him involved now. Especially since he doesn't like feeling like a beggar - he told me he is better than that.

I guess good luck comes to mind.

No worries, I didn't think you were bad-trolling. At first, I thought it might have been an especially lucid drunk thread.

To answer your question, $500 is a legit amount of money. A good test is that if someone called me and asked me to do a job and it paid $75, I probably would say no outright. Too busy for that noise. Come at me with $150, and I'm still making faces, even though I thought about it for a quick second. Same might even go for as much as $300. It's starting to sound appealing, but it's probably involved.

But I'm definitely getting out of bed for $500. I'll listen to your presentation.

In other words, I respect $500.

That could pay rent for a week. I'd take it for sure, but it would disappear so fast

That's 2/3rds of my monthly wage and can buy me a month's rent and food. I'd be seriously bummed if I lost or wasted that. But I wouldn't be ruined, of course, I take care to be protected from such events.

Where I'm from that's a month's rent in a respectable place.

There are people in my country whose entire monthly salary is less than that.

Entire families can be fed for that amount.

$500 is powerful.

I'd be kissing your ass for $500 even though i am decently well off. I'd make sure that this project you're on was not only perfect, it would give blow jobs at the end.

I kid, but whenever i take a job i show up and do it.

$500 is about 6 hours of work for me. Still, I respect $500. That is a round-trip Washington DC to Dominican Republic flight price.

RE: Do you respect $500?
$500 can almost buy you a cheap one-way ticket from Joburg to a major European city (11 hour direct flight), so yes, I would definitely respect $500.

When it comes to work, there my be considerations that make $500 not worthwhile. But it would have to be something like travelling 50+ km's a day to the jobsite for a few weeks to really start questioning.

I'd like to say only a rich person could shrug off $500, but they're probably less likely to shrug it off than your broke friend. Strange world.

Poor college student here.

Just checked and I've spent about $280 total this month without rent, so yea, I respect $500. And by coincidence have way more savings then most guys my age.

When I live like this I have no problem being able to spend half my time abroad and occasionally drop a grand for dinner in Singapore or go on a bender in Thailand with no problems.

Fuck, I lost $5000 lending to a guy who was a close friend, but ran his whole life off of the rails. I should have known better, the guy's brother is a billionaire and I guess he wouldn't lend to him.

$500 is one month's rent in a lot of places.

RE: Do you respect $500?
500 is the amount I feel comfortable carrying in my pocket so I'll explain why it deserves respect..

Having a bad day? Blowouts? Feeling down?

500 will get you a hotel room and a threesome with some backpage whores and a shitload of booze, cab rides and some weed and still have enough to order two meatlovers pizzas before you pass out..

Disclaimer: I've never done it but know that's the number
