RE: Selfies at funerals
I agree with the sentiment that this is completely abominable behavior and that this generation is fucked up, but I think it's important for us to keep in mind that there is nothing unusual about these kids, and I mean that in the biological and cultural sense. They are simply normal human beings responding to their cultural environment. The humans aren't the problem. It's the culture and the technology that is producing these effects. The culture itself is poisoned, and the technology is actively enabling and accelerating societal degeneration.
There is a widespread belief that technology is inherently good, or that at worst it is neutral. I don't buy into this belief. I think that many technologies are inherently harmful to human beings, and that we are currently experiencing the incredible harm that social media technology is inflicting on our culture. It's not something that our brains really understand how to handle. It encourages and amplifies the worst aspects of human social interaction while giving the illusion of being connected to other people. It's like junk food socialization.
I feel really sorry for the kids currently growing up in this environment, thinking that this is normal. They really never had a chance. Our culture completely sold them out. They're growing up in a cultural cesspool. And supposedly, this is what we call "progress". It must be progress, you see, because the phones are faster and more powerful than ever. As long as the technology gets better, we take it for granted that society is getting better along with it. But anyone with half a brain can see that the opposite is actually occurring. Society has been disintegrating in front of our eyes over the past several decades especially.
Those kids think nothing of taking selfies at funerals because they're growing up in an environment where traditional values are literally a joke, something to be laughed at. The only things that our society values are money and fame. So it makes sense for them to attention whore all the time, even at a funeral. It gives them a little shot of dopamine that makes them feel famous for a few seconds. They've got to get themselves out there, got to get those likes and comments on their pics and status updates. If they don't, they feel like a failure, a non-entity. Attention must be had at all costs, including propriety and one's dignity.
This is part of a deep, cultural rot that has infected the heart of Western civilization. It's symptomatic of the complete erosion of the traditional morals and virtues which guided men for millennia. We simply have no concept of them anymore. The idea of "progress" has become our only guiding light. So we upend all traditional social institutions and cultural values (progressivism) and worship our own creations (rampant technological innovation). There is no concept of the past or of man's traditional place in the world. It's just full speed ahead. Right into a brick wall.

Yeah, and still all those dorks in Silicon Valley can't invent a phone that doesn't drop calls like Alexander Graham Bell did in the 1800's.
Or make a battery that lasts as long as a Duracell in a f*cking flashlight.

I have to disagree with this.
Being young is about rebelling against what is normal/status quo.
I don't see kids rebelling against technology.
They embrace it like sheep.

I am telling you guys. These kids were raised on soy milk.

Notice these kids are all wearing insincere expressions on their faces.
They're not genuinely smiling.
They're doing exaggerated cartoon faces, making duck lips, making themselves drip with sarcasm.
Almost all of the photos lack authenticity.
Go look at old yearbooks and candid snapshots of teenagers from a couple decades ago. They actually looked like real people. Actually, they looked oddly mature and adult-like. They weren't faking it 24 hours a day like these children.

RE: Selfies at funerals
There is nothing "abominable" or even remotely objectionable about this. In fact, it's a perfectly civilized expression of simple and rather innocent human emotions.
Except for the death of an especially beloved relative or friend, most people do not feel any particular emotion at a funeral beyond discomfort and boredom, nor is there any reason why they should. What people do very often feel is guilt and confusion because of their failure to experience the sorrow and grief that they think are expected of them and that they (erroneously) expect of themselves.
This is especially true of kids, who have no natural relation to death whatsoever. Why would they?
If you look at the faces of these funeral selfie kids, they are honestly reflecting the discomfort, boredom and mild guilt and confusion that they experience on such an occasion. They are not attempting to manufacture any emotion that is not actually there. Someone noted that their expressions look insincere or not genuine, but this is a misreading of the tension between what these kids think they're supposed to feel at a funeral, and what they actually feel (like other normal people).
Something that is easy to misunderstand about these kids' usage of their supposedly soul-destroying devices is that it is entirely unselfconscious and indeed innocent. The phone might as well be an extension of their bodies and brains. It is a vulgarity to believe that by taking and posting these pictures they are laughing at "traditional values". They are doing nothing of the sort. They are merely communicating with each other in the way that they find most natural, conforming to their own (quite rigorous) conventions.
For the most part, I find these pictures unaffected and charming. There is very little visual cant here; very little attempt to bring manufactured emotions or ideologies to bear. These kids are just humbly and haplessly themselves.
same old shit, sixes and sevens Shaft...

I understand the conclusion you've come to, but I respectfully disagree. I experienced a lot of death through my childhood and teens, and we were all well aware of the seriousness of the situation, and that it required hushed respect and an awareness of others, so, that although we mightn't be hurting, others were.
This is simply young adults - I don't see 'children' here - who are either utterly clueless or uncaring of the expectations of respect and decency to guard the feelings of others around them. The experience of death isn't greater than their narcissism. Death offers them no room for reflection or introspection with their relatives and people who are in front of them in the moment, but is simply just another excuse to attention whore their status as the star of their own movie to their imagined audience (ooh, i have nice clothes, good hair).
You could argue it's some kind of denialist coping mechanism, but i'd venture for these YA's, if it's not filtered through social media, it doesn't exist. Including Grandma when she was alive.

RE: Selfies at funerals
You guys are being way too lenient.
Anyone who says the word "selfies" or even ever takes a "selfie" should be beaten till an inch of death.
I could have a friend for 20 years and if he ever said "selfies" or ever took a "selfie", I would never speak with him again.
But then again, I hold my friends to pretty high standards.
