Alain Delon actually was in the Army, during a French colonial war... He fought bravely. It explains why he is so good at playing tough guys, keeping their cool under pressure. Anything that Alain Delon and Jean-Pierre Melville worked on together was gold. It almost sounds funny to say, given the connotations of anything involving the French, but no motherfuckers were as good at portraying alpha males in gangster movies as the French were.

One thing about all this. Didn't Delon beat some guy to death? Or wasn't he at least accused of doing so?

Not that surprising, mon cher. People in the US forget some things about the "sissy" French :
