Woman Deserves to Get Punched, But of Course It's a Violation of Women's Rights
This "chick" steals a 75-year-old's purse and knocks her to the ground, then tries to bit the guy restraining her and gets socked in the face a few times. Now a petition claims the guy should be charged and that, of course, it was somehow a violation of women's rights...
The hilarity never ends.
Quote:GRAND RAPIDS, MI – While many hail as a hero the man shown on video pinning down an alleged purse snatcher on the eve of ArtPrize, there is a group of people who have signed an online petition to have the man criminally charged.
Local activist Robert Muhammad says he believes Jonathan Damon went too far on Sept. 17 when he delivered three punches to 24-year-old Mikayla Hull as he straddled the struggling woman and held her arms down until authorities arrived.
In the event, captured by MLive and The Grand Rapids Press on video, another man grabs Damon’s arm, stopping the punching. Damon says Hull was biting him.
Damon, an attorney based not far from where the incident occurred, says he later received medical treatment for the bite that included a tetanus shot and a prescription for antibiotics.
Damon was one of a handful of people who grabbed Hull after she allegedly stole the purse from a 75-year-old woman and tried to get away on her bike along Ottawa Avenue NW near the Grand Rapids Art Museum.
Hull has since been charged with aggravated assault and larceny.
Damon has not been charged because police determined his actions were justified.
But some do not agree and have started an online petition demanding the Kent County Prosecutor take action.
The petition, posted at Change.org ,had 200 online signatures as of Tuesday, Oct. 1.
The posting urges people to sign and describes the incident, but does not mention the alleged biting.
“During the arrest her arms and legs were held on the ground while a 250 lb. man (Jonathan Damon) sat on her chest,” the petition reads. “After pleading with him to let her up, she attempted to free herself and was punched in the face three times by Mr. Damon before one of the other men stopped him (on video).”
“We believe that this sets a dangerous precedent, as it regards ‘citizens' arrests’ and especially women's rights, in cases where men may attempt to arrest and detain women. This case should be carefully investigated and Mr. Damon should be prosecuted for his abuse of this young lady.”
In response to the petition, several who signed mention the controversial Florida prosecution of George Zimmerman, who was acquitted of murder charges in the shooting of Trayvon Martin.
The petition was initiated by 39-year-old Muhammad, who says he does not know anyone involved, but was moved to start the petition after seeing the video on MLive and seeing the comments following the online article.
“It disturbed me that so many looked at it and saw nothing wrong with it,” said Muhammad, an engineering technician. "Even if she committed a crime, she still has human rights.”
Kent County Commissioner Candace Chivis, D-Grand Rapids, wrote a letter to Kent County Prosecutor William Forsyth expressing her concerns.
“In my opinion, after having viewed the video twice, I do feel that the lawyer was in the wrong and you can clearly see that he is enjoying hitting the woman and he was probably not detaining her correctly and that's why she bit him," Chivis wrote in an email to Forsyth.
“You can also see that only because another guy steps in and stops him from hitting her does he stop. But, as far as I can see, all of that is just very disturbing and not illegal,” Chivis wrote. “I am not sticking up for the purse-snatcher, I am just wondering what actually constitutes assault regarding a citizen's arrest.”
Forsyth said he has no plans to prosecute Damon, whom he said was completely justified in his actions.
“I hate to disappoint them,” Forsyth said. “They can bring the petition here, but it won’t result in a prosecution.”
Forsyth said if anything, Damon should be commended for doing more than just standing by and watching as a crime occurs.
“Why she bit him and what his feelings were at the time he hit her are speculative and have no bearing on my decision not to prosecute him for his actions,” Forsyth said.
Forsyth said it is clear that Damon is stopping the woman from injuring him.
“Somehow, I’m supposed to prosecute him for that?” Forsyth said. “I’m not charging him with anything.”
Chivis said she is satisfied from a legal standpoint that Damon could not be prosecuted.
“I think there should be clearer rules for what can be done in a citizen’s arrest,” Chivis said. “I think he should be told by law enforcement that what he did was wrong. But I think that legally, Prosecutor Forsyth was right. There's very little legal recourse because she was committing a felony and he was detaining her.”
Muhammad said he sees Forsyth’s response as symptomatic of American society.
“I’m not surprised or shocked by (Forsyth’s) response,” “There are some class lines and racial lines that impact how we see this.”

white knighting justified. 75 year old ladies don't deserve their purses stolen. and purse thieves deserve to get their faces punched in regardless of gender.
don't lose sight of what's fair and just.

So you wouldn't tackle someone who stole some old woman's purse and knocked her down? We go down that route and we'll be the next China, where people will look the other way when muggings happen or even when young kids get run over in the street. One of the things I appreciate most about American culture is that a lot of us will still step in when we see someone in need, whether we know them or not.
All this "white-knight" rhetoric is getting a bit ridiculous...

I'll help her up, ask her if she's hurt, and call paramedics if she is. I'd even be willing to be a witness if she chooses to pursue charges. But no, I'm not tackling anybody or getting into a street fight on some woman's behalf.
Don't put yourself in any danger for any woman in this culture under any circumstances short of your girlfriend, wife, mother, sister, etc.

Simmer down.
White Knighting is when a guy comes in to cock block and score points under the guise of helping the girl.
This was a guy stopping a fucking thief who stole from a helpless person.
We were meant for far more than to suffer in our self created prisons only to die alone. It doesn't have to be that way. It never did.

RE: Woman Deserves to Get Punched, But of Course It's a Violation of Women's Rights
For the record, I'd have tackled the bitch even if it was a guy's purse she stole. Call me old fashioned.
One of the main reasons men are so often "thrown under the bus" is because, on a cultural level, we've lost our ballsacks and forgotten how to stand up for what we believe in. In other words, I think the reason American men get walked on is because they've become so docile, and I don't think rolling over and becoming more docile is going to do anything for steering our society back in the other direction.
Maybe all hope is lost, but it's good to see this old man (and a lot of the so-called white knighters out there) hasn't given up his sense of justice yet. And I think it's a big jump to say this guy is going to see any repercussions for this. If the noise level on the issue rises any further, I guarantee a lot of people who feel the same as I do are going to come out of the woodwork to support him.

The guys who wouldn't help a mugging victim are pathetic men.
This isn't about "men vs. women," this is about the rule of law and civil society. There is no white-knighting here.

Was the guy right to do what he did? yes he was but no matter what you do in this world there would always be people who resent you for it no matter how irrational so things like this shouldnt be a surprise.
There's a reason they say that, yes, but it doesn't follow that all good deeds actually do go unpunished. It's an extreme oversimplification and a poor one at that. It's a pessimistic view that simply does not stack up to reality at all.
I perform good deeds every chance I get and have ocaissonally put myself in harm's way to do so. It's yet to turn out too bad for me (though I'm not so foolish as to assume it never will). Standing up for right and wrong is a risk. If it was easy, everyone would do it. That doesn't mean it isn't worthy of doing, and it certainly doesn't mean those who choose to do so should be shamed as "white knights," as seems to becoming fashionable.
As for resentment, the response to this case is abnormal - it's not like people resent someone every time they intervene. Personally, I'd rather end up in jail someday doing something I felt was right than walk around for the rest of my life looking the other way out of concern that it was going to end up bad for me if I intervened. A minor assault charge, a short time in jail (if even - and most likely not in this case), and you go on sleeping well at night.
That said, this guy could have not punched the woman and still gotten her to stop biting him, so there's even a middle ground to walk here - the one the guy who grabbed his arm to stop him walked. Common sense keeps you out of trouble 95% or even 99% of the time while still doing what's right. You use your judgement, and maybe don't get involved if you think the threat to yourself really is just too great, or hold back those extra punches if you think it might put you in jail. But aside from that, who cares if people resent you as long as you're doing what you think is right?
This whole idea that we should never get involved with anything anytime just smells like fear to me though, or some other kind of excuse. I don't mean to pick on you specifically as I know a lot of guys these days feel the same way, but as for me, I can't see living that way.

To be fair, I saw a mention of the Trayvon Martin case in there too, so the real backing for the uproar might even be racial. Haven't looked into it enough to be honest.
But I do agree with you.

Look at how fucked up the average feminist's morals are:

I realize you, BB, and Fisto are being honorable, and part of me really does respect that, but another part of me has to wonder if you guys have your heads screwed on right.
Remember Tom Ball? The guy who doused himself in gasoline and lit himself on fire outside a family court? Remember the response of feminists and manginas? He was just a "kook", and he should have manned up etc. etc.
That was a level of indifference that was very difficult for me to swallow, but it's the level of indifference that is pretty much the market price for your humanity as a man in this culture. And despite this fact you're still willing to engage a criminal over the contents of a purse? Maybe $40 and some identification? How is it you've come to think so lowly of yourself?
And what if you get stabbed or shot? What if you hit your head and go deaf in one ear? Will anyone give a shit? No, they won't. You're the only person in this society that cares about your humanity, they won't care more about you if you save some old lady's purse.
Rule of law and civil society? When a man burns himself to death in front of a family court and the news media ignores it then forgive me if I fail to give a shit.
