I read a few of his books as a teenager. What I found interesting was his attention to technical detail. It always seemed like he had some crazy inside information, which is even more odd because he was never in the military.

I was never a huge fan, but anyone who goes his own way in life and makes a living at it has my admiration.


“I tell them you learn to write the same way you learn to play golf,” he said. “You do it, and keep doing it until you get it right. A lot of people think something mystical happens to you, that maybe the muse kisses you on the ear. But writing isn’t divinely inspired — it’s hard work.”

He was only 66 years old. He looked older - another reminder that your physical appearance is a better guide to your health than your chronological age.

Interesting fact - in 1998 Clancy was going to buy the Minnesota Vikings for $205 million. But the cost of his divorce caused the deal to fall through.

Because we all know his wife was there by his side, helping write his novels and providing wise counsel as he turned himself into a brand name and multi-million dollar publishing and media empire.
