It's the time in my life where I have to start my college applications. You may not be surprised that due to its rigorous academia the number one school on my list is...... Arizona State University *cough cough*. I was just wondering if there was anyone here who either attended ASU knows/ knew anyone attends or has spent anytime around the college who could provide any knowledge On everything from the girls, best campus, best nightlife options etc... Any wild ASU stories would be warmly welcomed too. I will be trying to play football at ASU too so hopefully that would help me out in more ways than one.

I know people that went there, they said it was hot all the time, but a dry heat, and a total party school.

I went there but it was over 20 years ago: pre-facewhore.

One think I think might still be good is girls don't think they're the shit because they're in Arizona.
It's not cool like LA or SF. Dry heat but aircon everywhere, I liked the warmth.

From my outsider view here in a State school town, it's best to be in a fret, the sorority chicks I've seen are uniformly hot.

Didn't go there, but I occaisionally hit Mill Ave. to get my old man creep on. Tons of quality pussy there, and the climate means that they seldom bundle up. Living in and around Phx is kind of shitty though.

What do you want to study?

It goes without saying a college degree is nothing more than a debt ridden partied piece of paper unless you're going into a STEM field.

Nothing is worse than going to school for 4 years living up life, than entering an empty job market with creditors calling.

STEM people make more, but sometimes enjoy it less. I took computer science for job security, got it but hated it. Went back for a doctorate in non-STEM and got very good pay.

When you get the grad degree level, STEMs only make about 13% more according to this US Senate report pushing STEM education.

Bachelor's in STEM make 23% more.

The Combine wants you making widgets, not thinking about society or silly stuff like that. Make some iPhones and drone bombers. Be a real man.

The thing is, he's an undergrad and not a grad student. The situation is a lot different for current graduates and in the case for the OP, will definitely be different in four years.

The goal of every college graduate should be to not enter their first job making 11$/hr. The whole concept of "putting in ones time" is an excuse for a race to the bottom in terms of wages.

If the OP doesn't want to graduate college and have to work for a pittance, he should definitely consider a STEM degree and career. If anything, a stem degree is incredibly flexible. He will have to answer this question for himself.

I graduated college with a degree in english lit, but thankfully landed a job in software development (work study in IT woot). I wish i studied comp sci instead. Most of my friends are working part time jobs at coffee shops or worse doing nothing.

Yeah, the situation is that bad for current college grads. The OP will need to hunt far and wide to avoid living in squalor for the first few years out of school .... or live with mom and dad.

Another good thing about some STEM areas (like software engineering) is that the competition for jobs is not that fierce. While jobs in Accounting and Finance have much higher "salary ceilings", the competition is very fierce. In software engineering, a job posting may read like an employer wants someone with skills:

A,B,C,D,E and F

If the candidate has A,B,D and part of F....they still have a GREAT chance to get the job because there are not enough folks with ALL the skills (and looking)

In the Accounting/Finance world, a job posting may read like an employer wants someone with skills:

A,B,C,D,E and F

...and the candidate BETTER HAVE ALL of A,B,C,D,E and F and a 3.75 GPA and attended and ranked school and bakes cookies and washes cars on the side as hobbies.

I have been considering a degree in Engineering but science has never been a strong point of mine so that put me off to an extent. What UrbanNerd said is correct though it seems that careers in Finance (what I was considering) are very over saturated. Though I am a believer that if you choose a good degree and not something like Communications, you can parlay it into something good depending on how creative you are and how hard you are willing to work for it. That's just me though. The thought of working for 20 years for a company kills me.

As far as Phoenix, there are some benefits & a lot of drawbacks to living here.

Benefits:
1. Compared to other major metro areas the COL is less
2. If you like hiking & outdoor activities you will love it here
3. The weather from Oct - Mar is awesome
4. You have the ASU girls & the girls tend to be more liberated (this can be both a good & bad thing) compared to those in other major metro areas. Also, you dont need to attend the school to take advantage of this.
5. All of the bars are located in one area (Tempe/Scottsdale)
6. Cali or Vegas is within driving distance

Drawbacks:
1. The summer here is brutal (you have been warned)
2. The public transportation system sucks so driving is pretty much mandatory
3. If you want to be in an area remotely cosmopolitan you are limited to living in central phoenix
4. Theft (auto, property, etc) is rampant & crime is pretty much normal and accepted here. Similar to Florida most transplants are here to run away from there true selves (and their problems) and start fresh. As a result you have a lot of ex. convicts here and old habits are hard to break. Use discretion when meeting people & building relations.
5. Believe it or not there are a lot of closet homos here & you REALLY have to use discretion when screening people out.
6. Substance (drugs & alcohol) and self-abuse is almost normal and accepted (especially in the 15-40yo age group)
7. There are a ton of fake people here. If you are here to slay the girls this doesnt matter & you can run game to get the poon. However, if you want to date this can be a nightmare. Pro-tip: slay the local poon but date girls out of state. Once again discretion is pretty much mandatory.



YMMV may vary on this but I just described Phoenix & the surrounding cities in a nutshell.
