I saw this earlier today.

Calvin and Hobbes is probably the only thing I've read over and over again since I was 5 years old up until now. I read it at 5, then 10, then 16, then again at around 25.

Every time I've picked it up and read through the series, it was like I was reading a totally different strip each time.

The Simpsons has had a similar effect.

Probably one of the top three comic strips of all time. Bill Watterson actually modeled his creations and their particular quirks after philosophers John Calvin and Thomas Hobbes. If you read their dialogues, especially the ones they have when trudging through the snow or flying downhill on a wagon, you'll notice how he injects the voice of each philosopher into their respective character.

It's a great statement from the man himself, and the artist captures Watterson's style beautifully.

Huge admirer here. I've got the entire collection. Watterson's beautifully illustrated backgrounds and smart dialogue were way beyond any other comic strip or cartoon. I was sad when he retired since I was still pretty young, but growing up now I have a huge amount of respect for the guy. He was offered a fortune for the licensing fees and walked away from it to keep the comic strip his own. Mad props.

I agree.

One of the few voices in the media that actually had something to say instead of a bunch of mindless, soul-sucking garbage.

Modern media is so self-possesed, I am glad he kept it his own instead of getting gobbled up by Big Media.

I gotta snag my old C&H collections next time I visit my parents.

I used to have a couple of Garfield comic compilation books laying around. Those books must have been read at least 50 times each. Also, a Peanuts collection

Calvin would have grown up to be the ideal player: adventurous, living in the moment, doing his own thing, making fun of girls, and full of energy.

I modeled a lot of my childhood after the comic.

Playing Calvinball with the boys in my neighborhood is one of my fondest memories.
