I recommend not making the spreader bars, gags, or handcuffs from rope. They are flimsy and impractical. Better alternatives are tape gags and dowels and the basic wrap (see last video above).

Cat o' nines made of rope can look and work really nice, though.

TKB has several books all of which are quite good and make great dining table conversation.
