Thanks for the well-wishes gents. It was a bastard at more than one point, but she's done and it only took me a little longer than I was expecting it to. I think about when I started, and mentally, I was only a child. But now, after some adversity (ie. rejected proposals, failed relationships (X2), multiple summers alone and far away from home), you become a man.

With regards to the teaching over research. Those are my thoughts as well. I see a lot of students, myself included, who grew disenchanted with their studies because of shitty profs or TA's who were only in the classroom because their contract required them to be. I've been lucky having a couple of great professors I've either learned from or worked under, and I want to be able to do the same for future students.

Time to dust off the solo game, imagine I'm Giovonny, and use this PhD to good effect.

If you're more interested in teaching, consider getting a faculty position at a lesser school. I know some folks from when I was doing my degree that ended up at less well known schools but are able to teach undergrads while still publishing papers. However, as I'm sure you know, when you're on the Assistant/Associate/Full Prof track, you do have to do research...just not at the same level as a big name school.

Of course you can also be a lecturer at a CC, but you will get no respect and no benefits. Avoid.

Yeah, publishing is par for the course if you're going to be a full-time prof. I should get four pubs out of my thesis, and another couple out of this post doc. The good thing about my field is that you can apply the same basic research protocol to every problem. I'm in a field that deals with natural resources, but surprisingly there aren't a lot of jobs in Canada that are available for people like me. That's fine by me, since I've wanted to get out and live in another country for a while for the last little while anyways.

Thought about it, like you mentioned summers off, pretty laid back work environment, coeds, etc. At my college most professors are pretty cool, some would go to parties, I had a few I'd smoke a bowl with and chat with after class in their office from time to time.

I hear they are tough jobs to get, at a minimum you need a masters more likely a doctorate. Some community colleges will let you in with a bachelors, especially if your knowledgable in some unique field.

Another cool thing even fulltime professors have quite a bit of time off so many will moonlight and teach a course here and there at other colleges nearby as well.

Actually, one field where getting a PhD is almost a surefire way to land a job is in Geology...oil companies hire these people readily. The only problem is that you will have to move to a place like Houston, which is just not my cup of tea.
