The OP says "White girls now having quinceaneras" which makes no sense since quinceaneras are a cultural (sometimes more religious based) tradition and not based on skin color. A similar type of tradition for boys in America could be a bar mitzvah, or bat mitzvah for girls.

Here we have our version of that, Fiesta de Quince (Fifteem Party), but while expensive, is in no way similar to the mexican party. Here is more about a family reunion celebrating the coming of age of a women.
Saly, now the trend among these brats is to spend the money in a group trip to Disney/Cancun/etc than in the party itself.

Yup. The article is paper-thin. Which, quite frankly, is what we should expect from the Economist these days.

All it says is: "The custom is spreading. One of those polled, Eric Silva, says that more than a dozen Anglo, black and Indian-American families have asked for a quinceañera rather than a more typically American Sweet Sixteen party in the past two years—though Anglos don’t spend very much, he sniffs."

Okay, but how many party planners were polled and how large is their normal Latin customer base? More than a dozen white, black, and Indian families? Is that a significant fraction of all families holding quinceañeras in San Antonio?

Maybe someone has better evidence of white chicks starting to throw quinceañeras but this article doesn't provide it.
